Ok I'm going to hunt the parts down myself as I think I can reduce the cost by bargin hunting for them but I will get my mechanic to install the box, clutch & ECU.
I'll be searching for a T5 from a EF/EL falcon the newer the better I reckon and have been told it would be a much better choice due to better gear ratio's and other things or just plain built alot better then the EA/EB/ED one's. One problem I have is should I keep the 3speed auto or sell it and for how much for as it is in top condition no problems at all and serviced on a regular basis.

I spent $800 initially I basically bought a GL EA with dead motor. Very cheap conversion kit I sold the left over car for $600 so it basically cost my $200 I also Spent ~$160 on a new clutch. I was definately worth it I still try to drive it every opotunity I get (I bought AU Fairmont this year) The 5 speed conversion gave it a much better fuel economy as well as making it more fun to drive.

someone said the t5s in ef are the same as au...is the 4spd auto the same in both cars?

I dont think they are there is no dipstick for a start (noteven a bung where it would have gone) You probably could interchange them thou I doubt there are any major differences.

yeah, they got rid of the dipstick in teh autos during the EF's, the EFII's didn't have them IIRC.
The 3speed ecu, and 5 speed ecu for an EA is physically the same. The pedal box is teh hardest part of the job to change. The dash needs to be pulled back (easy), and then alot of juggling around, to get it to come out of there... you get it in the end. The manual T5's changed from the EA/EB to the EBII's, where the clutch became the 6 bolt clutch (as opposed to the 3 bolt), and the ratio for first was changed to 3.25 instead of 3.5. Also they became full synchro'd. The conversion is definately worthwhile, makes the car feel so much better. Also if you have a 3speed, then Im pretty sure the driveshaft needs to be a 4speed/5speed one. Also if you have an EA, the drive shaft needs to be out of an EA/EB as for the diff having the u bolts, and not the flange. There was a really good doco about it on some site.. can't remember it though. Try a search, it had wiring, and all that you need to convert. Cheers

Cheers The Tailshaft is the same you dont need to change it. I replaced the EA tailshaft to an EF one and changed the yoke on diff to the Ef flange type. There are no real wiring changes its just a matter of plugging gearbox loom in the inhibitor switch bypass is wired into the plug in transmission loom. I remember the pedal box installation was a pain in the neck it was the most time consuming part of the conversion.

yeah, but my starter relay also needed rewiring...I jut thought I read that the 3 speed tailshaft wasn't right for the T5 in the EAs. I needed alot of wiring changes, as I have an EBII. And then I tricked the ECU.

Cheers I ran with the 3 Speed tail shaft untill everytime I had to take it out I kept breaking the bolts on U shackles. So we put the tailshaft out of an EF II in. It wasnt the only 3 speed conversion when my brother converted his EA to 5 Speed we used the 3 Speed tailshaft. We compared the tailshafts between 3 speed and 5 speed and leanght is the same the only reason we used the 3 speed one was the uni's were new in 3 speed tailshaft. As for wiring in EB 2 I am not sure as I dont have a wiring diagram but those changes may have been due to the 4 speed auto.

yeah, most probably. I'll take your word on the driveshaft. Doesn't surprise me. Just thought the 3 speed might be longer or something.
