Is it an AU 1 or 2/3???? The AU 2/3's have a laminated firewall with a type of urethane insulation inbetween the steel sheets. Very hard to weld.

sorry to steer the topic slightly, but CJH, do the II and IIIs have as many firewall issues as the e series with that design?
I havent heard of that before |

i've heard that nearly all the series have had some type of firewall problem. especially with the cable clutch. i think once a heavy duty clutch has been put in the extra pressure, plus flimsy bit of metal called a firewall has no chance and just gives way.
i was hoping i could just find someone where i can drop it off, fix it all up and drive away. it looks like to much of a hassle to do myself.

you will find most cars with a manual clutch system (not hydrolic) there are issues with firewall versitility (unless is it a superior design) the thing is only know with the BA etc they have put in a hydro system, ford f**k up really with have the EA to AU manual clutch setup ya think they would of found out that the firewalls crack etc etc
i am sure ring around to various places and that even ya local ford dealer and see what they say,,, it is common problem (well a fordmods one any way) there would have to be some one

Thats the first place I took it and I got a quote on how much it would cost. This is what they came back with. Clutch Kit Clutch Cable Clutch Pedal Box Assembly Flywheel Machine Cluth fork Bush Firewall to be Welded Both Sides Dash Needs to be Removed Brake Master Cylinder, Booster, Firewall Insulation and ENGINE require to be removed to Repair Firewall Parts Cost @1209.90 Labour @ 15.5 Hours $1670.90 Welding and Reinforcement Repair $250.00 Tow Truck Transport from Panel Shop $240.00 For a Total cost of 3370.80. I dont want to sounds arrogant, but seriosuly how dumb do they think some of us are?

I have repaired firewalls before, and I didn't remove the engine. The whole dash assembly, yes, booster, yes.
Most of the time, the problem is caused by a clutch cable that hasn't been adjusted properly, or there was a prob with the clutch. My 88 EA has never had the firewall fixed, or pedal box repaired or replaced. It has a HD clutch, been in it for about 2yrs or more now, haven't had a prob.

The X-Series didnt have this problem did they - and they had a manual cable clutch using a bolt-on point. Is this a good way to pre-modify an E-Series before they die perhaps?

I get that - was just thinking that the XD/E stuff should be easy to find these days, and it would bolt/screw straight on.
