My EL XR8 has really crap brakes, sometimes I think they are not gonna pull the car up, even when slowing down for traffic lights etc around town.
I know there are a lot of posts like this already but I was wondering what you guys think is the better option. Should I go for DBA slotted rotors and new pads all round or should I look at upgrading to bigger brakes all together? I know that getting bigger brakes would be expensive but I would rather make sure that if I go for just replacement DBAs then I'm gonna notice a big enough difference from standard that it would be worth the money so I wouldn't then have to pay again for an upgrade. Brakes are pretty important to me as I do a lot of spirited mountain pass driving on the weekends and the standard brakes feel almost dangerous. Just looking at the specs and the standard front rotors are only 287mm and the rear are actually bigger at 299mm. Any prices or ideas / opinions would be appreciated. Cheers

my brakes were really dodgy (way under thinkness), so i went and got a set of dba's and good pads. and i think that they have been a GREAT improvment.
mine havent bedded in yet, but already they pull up well, but better yet they dont loose their bite under repeated mild/heavy twisty hill road use. under a heavy 100 > 0 stop i oops and locked a front (non-abs). just my ramblings. |

As you do "spirited" driving I would recommend BDA slotted, and some good pads.
"Good pads" will depend on if you want to replace the pads more often, ie soft pads, or less often but have some disc wear, ie harder pads. Pad choice really depeds on the drivers choice and driving style. I would also recommed Hightech brakes, one of the site sponsors, as they did an excellent job in their recommendations for the S/C DBA's that supplied for me.

Yeah give cam at hightek brakes in morrabin a call that do good discounts for FM members and can highly recommend meant them....have my brakes from them twice on my EF XR6 and now the EL XR8 as well.
On the XR8 just recently had dba slotted rotors added and just bendix advance pads and its so much better....a step up on the XR6 i went with ebc green stuff pads much better and also braided brake lines and that a whole lot better again.....obviously tho lots more moula but cant put a price on good brakes....hmmm just to get some 4 potters

I had s**t brakes on my XR8 when I bought it, so I upgraded to DBA slotted in the original size, then threw on a set of ultimax pads.
the car pulled up better than any car I have ever ridden in, but the pads only lasted about 20,000 Km's, since then I have tried 3 different types of big name brands and found em all to be average when travelling under 60km/h, I now run a set of $30 premier cheapies , and they are awsome , and have now done 15,000k's and still look new, I currently have the calipers off so I am certain of they're condition!

Thanks for the replies. Last night I had to let my girlfriend drive home through the hills in the XR and when we got home she was telling me how s**t the brakes felt. Looks like I will go the dba slotted. No one reccommends (spelling) the upgraded calipers etc? I'm guessing that this would be way to expensive anyway, but as said before i don't mind spending the extra money on brakes coz they are kind of important.
I read somewhere on here that getting the EL GT brake setup would be around 4-5k is that about right? Is that all four wheels or just the front? I have EL GT mags so there wouldn't be a problem fitting the bigger brake set up in.

prety sure the 4k is the whole shebang
also you could have some air/water in the brake lines try replaceing and bleeding the system as well

I think after you get some DBA slotted rotors and some EBC Greenstuff pads you'll be happy with the setup.
I'd also recommend getting some stainless steel braided brake lines that can be had for around $250 for all four brakes further improving your braking. I'm sure that will suffice. |

No worries will look into the braided lines as well.
Cheers

Hey guys i read that everyone is into there DBA's specially slotted ones!!! would there be much difference of what would be better - the DBA's or a second hand pair of EL GT's with new pads??
just seeing cause i need to upgrade my brakes - due to buying a boat and needing better stopping power!! |

Well EL GT's were bigger (300mm?), so you need the twin pot calipers.
Mucho $$$ (new spindles) DBA slotted should do the trick. If you're towing a boat with an auto, make sure you've got a trans cooler.

any change of rotor size means a change of upright and hubs etc. as all this costs a fortune you get great improvements with DBA's and Bendix advance pads. I am very happy with mine. Rebuilding the calipers is a a bastard but essential. I also made up teflon sleeves and rehashed the rubber mounts to give a non-seizing set up and so far it has been perfect for 18 months.
