Hi guys i drive an el fairmont ghia and lately it has been making a crunching sound coming from the front brakes im guessing when im comming to a stop while braking. At higher speeds just to slow down i can not hear the noise, however when i am at slower speeds coming to a complete stop i hear an awful crunching or scraping noise. Could my pads be so worn that it is metal on metal?
Thanks guys Nath |

I would say that YES your pads are down to the metal . Please replace them ALL before you end up around a pole or buried in the side of somones car or worse . Dont mess around get them fixed as soon as possible.

Check all the pads, disc rotors and wheel bearings immediatley and do not drive the car until you've done so, it's dangerous and unroadworthy.

A few other people have mentioned i might have a small stone stuck in my pads, which makes more sense to me as the brakes function fine and i havnt had any trouble braking, its just a noise that happens sometimes when im coming to a complete stop. im gonna check it out now and see if there is anything there.
Papa are the wheel bearings expensive and what are the symptoms of a wheel bearing being stuffed? Thanks guys |

Thanks guys If you buy them Genuine Ford, EA 1B049 AKT you will be looking at $60.00 per side. This includes 2 brgs and a seal plus split pin. I am sure you could buy them cheaper at AutoBahn or Supercheap. When a wheel brg is buggered on the front the symptoms are vvery similar to what you describe. It would mean that the needle rollers would have dropped out, I have seen cars that HAVE had that problem. |

oh ok well im swinging more towards that then. Would this make sense as well: yesterday the noise happened as i was breaking and as i turned left nearly full locked the noise was still happening when my foot was off the brakes and accelerating slowly. Does this still sound like a wheel bearing?
Thanks papa |

Sounds like a wheel bearing. Autopro just did me Timken complete set, $31.00 per side.
As I asked in your other thread, how long since you did the Brake Pads? Drop your front wheels off and check your dics as well. If it is the pads down to metal, you may have scored the discs and may have stuffed them. They will need to be machined if they are scored or may need to be replaced, as well as new pads. |
