hi all,

i think i may have stuffed my diff, theres a dirty crunching noise comming from it when i slow down, usually really noticable around 0-50km/h but thats as fast as i took it cuz i still needed to get it home.

do i need a new diff? if so how whats a better stronger diff to chuck in and how much to get it installed.
can it simply and cheaply be fixed?

The first thing to do would be to check that there is oil in the diff. If the diff has oil and it is crunching then it could be the diff, or it could be a failed axle. Just replace the diff anyway. Another standard second hand diff in good condition should be fine.

jack the car up and drain the oil out of the diff. You might get away with an oil change fixing it, but if the oil is all kinda metallic looking as opposed to blue or a burnt sort fo red colour then you've f**k your diff.
Is it an LSD? If not f**k it off and get an LSD.
If it is an LSD get it rebuilt.
Brett4777 on here is a diff specialist afaik, maybe drop him a pm and he might be able to help you out.

same with mine... it did it once.. hasn't done it since...

i was coming up a slight hill on a main road... i put the peddel to the floor.. it reved to like 5 n half then i backed off.. i flatted it again... reved out... i did it once more... got half way up the revs and it hooked on, and away we went.

It made the crunching sound from back end... but as i said it hasn't done it since...

cheers for the replies all,

i should of said earlier the reason it started crunching was because of about 45min thrashin it around my mates property and a few big burnouts on his driveway :roll: (don't worry ppl it's rural area no one to smell the smoke).
so im pretty sure i've done something bad to it.

No it doesn't have an LSD but im pretty keen for one as i already have one in my calais and i like how they work, so really what im asking is roughly how much can i pick up a second hand one from the wreckers or anywhere else??
btw im not after anything flash just something real strong and can take punishment. Im also thinking of upgrading the drive shaft as well something like an ED xr8 or XR6 one?? basicially the car is now for burnouts and drifting a fun weekender.

You can pick up a 3.23 LSD fairly cheaply, but you really want a 3.45, which is like 600+.

A diff mechanic told me that if you want to do burnouts then use a single spinner diff. They handle burnouts much better than limited slip diffs.

True, but single spinner burnouts are feckin gay. Absolute weakass try hard attempt at a burnout. You want real burnouts weld your single spinner. A locked diff produces the best results.

you can't drift properly with a single spinner.
