Can someone tell me if it's a big task to change the front discs? I just picked up a set of slotted dbas today and some new pads as the front brakes are just about cactus. Will I require any special tools or anything?

You do not need to buy any special tools as far as i remember. Also go buy a handbook. Very helpful.

Peice of piss, wheel off, two bolts, push caliper up, push old pad in, new pads on, disc off, replace, I did mine in a hour, including wheel bearings, in a hotel car park, just with basic tools, and a tool for pushing caliper piston in, 10 bucks from repco.

should you get new wheel bearings or does re-packing with fresh grease suffice on the ones that are already on there?

Depends whether they are still any good, I did cause i didnt want to pull off the wheel disc etc again, while its all off, might as well do them, or at least tighten/adjust them up. Check whether they have any play before taking your wheels off.

Wheel bearings were done about 20,000km ago so they be fine. So does the disc just slide over the studs?

I did mine a few months ago.. For the price, best to put new wheel bearings in while ya got it all apart.. Not a hard job at all..
DBA slotted are defiantly worth the upgrade too

Yep, just slides over them, even mongoose could do that!!!!

From memory when i done the front discs on my el the hub and disc are a single item not seperate like ba's so it takes a little longer as you have to pack new bearings and adjust preload.

The brake rotor is also the wheel hub, your new rotors should have the bearing caps already pressed into position so its not hard to regrease the original bearings if they're in good nick.
A mongoloid with a shifter can do this job though it pays to have the correct size spanners. |
