Well, my gearbox has started to scare me now, before it was just stuffed (slipping, getting airlock when cold, no manual gear selection) today id driven like a granny for a bit till the box warmed up (so it didnt get airlock on shifts when turning) made a righthand turn at a set of lights (going up a hill) put the foot down, revs went way past the shiftpoint, but before i could back of (it happened REAL fast) got to 4 odd grand (in neutral) then went into gear, it made the BIGGEST bang sound id ever heard (im sure i felt it through the centre console) tyres chirped, and continued on like nothing happened, the sound was like something big hit the inside of the transmission casing (or the trans hitting the tunnel), i pulled over a bit up the road got out expecting there to be trans fluid pissing out of the big hole id just made - nothing, ive decided id better hurry up and get my new box though - anyone with similar experiences (and did you s**t yourself as bad as i did).

LOL, i wondered what would happen if i did that, so i searched around here (some old threads before FM went down) and was told exactly what you found out, did it by accident one day too, trust me, what you experienced was nowhere near as bad as what happened to me today,

Was stuffing around one day, took off from a set of lights in a 110 zone, held first, then clicked to second, and at about 100 slid it forwards into d. But for some reason it slipped into neutral, and decided to redline :D Thankfully it didnt get to reverse

i think there is safety mechanism that stops it going to R or P while the car is moving, anyone care to try?

you can't accidently knock it up - you can only move it by pressing the button in though!

Yeah, but what happens in an electronically controlled auto if you try and put it into reverse whilst moving forward??

if the shifter gate, or pin is worn enough it can and will inadvertently get knocked (or youll go past it as andrew J did), im talking about some kind of electrical/mechanical lockout that in the event of it going into R or P the box will simply NOT do anything. (like how you cant put it into 1st above a certain speed)

It will still engage. Trust me. It will feel like 2 gears trying to mesh while one of them is locked so one gear will skip and shudder over the other.

i have a question regarding the auto gearbox
does manually upshifting and downshifting have any adverse effects on the box?

thanks
