My manual XR8 ute has a bit of a whine. Not sure if its diff or box. When driving the slightest touch and i mean very light touch of acel pedal changes the whine noise to a higher pitch.
Changed the Oil in Diff and Biox but no differnce. Any ideas?? Cheers Last edited by ro88bo on Wed Sep 08, 2010 2:39 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

G'Day mate. Does the wine stop when you shift to 4th gear??
If so it may be a cluster gear issue? If not, where does the sound come from? Front or rear Cheers Stu |

No its there in all gears. As soon as drivetrain has the slightest load the sounds changes pitch. sometimes i think its diff and then i change my mind to gearbox!

Could be pinion bearing. I've thought it was rear wheel bearings, front wheel bearings, ended up being pinion bearing.

If the sound changes when you are using the clutch, it could be the thrust bearing is on it's way out.

Say if i was doin 80kph with no throttle, and then put foot on acel just enough to take slack out of drivetrain. Then noise changes. Will take to a diff shop Cheers |

Change your rear wheel bearings first. it got rid of some of the grinding metallic noise but it's not as bad as before. good thing the diff guy was up front with his prognosis and suggested to change the more excisable parts first to isolate where the problem is. he reckons it might be just a pinion bearing thats playing up in the diff.

Yep, it's the BA11 xr6 ute. even though the wheel bearings are changed there is still a slight whine when you load the driveline. remove your foot from the pedal and it's gone, tap the pedal again and the very low pitch whine is instance.

hi all
what is the average cost to get your pinion bearing replaced or fixed! is it sort of a simple fix or is it a long exspensive task. $$ ball park figure would be nice as i think mine is f**k aswell! only happens in 1st gear up to 40klph then i cant hear it, pete. |

I got a couple of quotes and the highest is $1300-$1500 with the works.
the other is just new bearings, what nots and shims to make her nice and tight if pinions are ok. $750-$900 depending on what needs replacing apart from the pinion gears.

Sounds like pretty standard rebuild prices. Both Craft and Diff dynamics in Sydney are in that price range for an overhaul service providing there is nothing major going on.
