1. r all ford housings the same (EA-EL)?

2. can all diff centres be swapped around (I know about 25/28 spline differences so dont confuse)

the 3.45/3.08 question...
3. specifically can a lsd centre with 3.45 gears fit into an ef/el 3.08 diff housing...

seems to be a lot of conflicting info out there...

it seem that the ef/el 3.08 diff is actually a BW 75 series......while all the others eg ea-ed, ef/el 327 345 r 78 series..

right..

what about the 277 292 ea diffs r these 75 or 78?

why would ford change the series like that....or is it to do with the compatablity of ratios..

I changed my diff recently from a 3.08 to a 3.45 and took pics.

sorry to hijack your thread gogetta but im looking to put a slipper in my car soon currently have a 3.08ss. what ratio could i go to without any hassles ie a straight swap? thanks boys i got no idea bout diffs

basically 3:08 can fit 3:23 and 3:45 gears
BUT you have to machine the shims and bearing cups to make them fit
quite a bit of work to get right.

whereas a 3:23 housing will take 3:45 gears no problems at all

internally the 3:08 is smaller

Also remember the EL housing has different mounting holes and the watts link pin is different. If anyone wants to put a pre EL housing into an EL it is a lot of work.

you can put an ef diff into an el but you need to change upper arms and handbrake cable!

But then you end up with EF geometry, and EL is better.

so if i was to change diffs would it be better to do a straight axle swap?

your axles will still fit
but complete diff with axles is always easier to fit

Yep, and no messing around with ensuring you install the centres properly (re: shimming and such).

data_mine : even tho the housings look basically the same its the internal differences that cause the problems.......

I think if u check the markings on the pinions and crown and carrier etc u will find 75 series (0575) markings on the ef/el 3.08 diff, the 78 (0578)..this will all be inside the housing...

75,78 refers to the diameter of the crown(I think) in inches...75=7.5 inches 78=7.75 inches so we're talking .25in (6.5mm) difference....f**k all difference to the casual observer...

so im trying to figure out which diffs r 75 and which r 78.......

as far as I can tell -
75 : ef/el 3.08

78 : ef/el 3.27/3.45
eb2 3.27/3.45

unknown -
ed 3.08
ea all

can anyone verify...

what exactly has to be machined?

pinion bearing cups/shims or carrier? or both?

Remember that EF/EL have a drum hand brake and EA/EB/ED have diskbrake operated handbrake. So hand brake cables are different etc, also brake pressure line comes to the center of the diff and runs to each brake EF/EL run brake line to one side and across the axle to the other. So you have to run a different brake line from the front of the car.
Another thing brackets need to be fitted to chassis for h/b cable and center mounted h/b in cab needs floor mods.
