Driving along on the highway put my foot down a little to overtake some trucks and .........Thump, this crazy sound came from the back left of the car when the auto changed down, then she started to get a bit whiney...... Pulled over had a look underneath and now theres diff oil sprayed everywhere....

What is the best thing to do get a diff reconditioned or buy a new one? BTW i have an EB series one XR8 Auto, it has already killed one diff before, and this was a second hand one from the wreckers...... what do you guys think i should do?

i have the original XR8 diff which was not LSD, and the one that just went, which was is an LSD out of an el or ef XR8. which would be better to rebuild???

also i have a high performance 3.27 LSD in my old 6 clyinder EB S which i havent sold yet. It doesn't have any noise, but i don't know if it is worth risking a second hand diff again.....

so i guess i will go for the rebuild, what should i expect to pay????

A standard XR8 diff that wasn't LSD? I didn't know such a thing existed. You learn something new every day :)

I guess it depends what broke as to which one is the best one to repair, I would stick to a 3.45:1 tho

It will be a stuffed LSD if it came from an XR8 and wasnt LSD, and all threee diffs you have should all be 3.27:1, the two Xr8 diffs would be better candidates for a rebuild though, they are different to the 6cyl units (stronger).

The diff oil is pumping out of the overflow, so its not a stuffed seal??

Also my dad seems to think that the bang sound i heard is to do with the torque bar that holds the motor in (something like that.......) The sound only happens when i'm at like 100 kph and accelerate to overtake and it changes down and the sound comes in at 3000 revs, and only lasts like a second... Is this normal like he says?

The whiney noise is getting worse slowly though, can hear it spinning easily at slow speeds too. So the diff needs to get done anyway. I think i will get the 3:27 XR8 LSD reconditioned, anybody delt with Diff Lapping in brisbane before?

LOL
I find driving WITH lsd in the wet a little crazy, every gearshift with ur foot in a little results in the back end stepping out, not the best of things when your going up a hill n its pouring down..
And when i say foot in i dont mean doing crazy speeds, i mean just going up the hill bit quickly, 2500rpm most

Secondhand LSD's from wreckers are bad value IMO, most want $700 odd for one, wheras you can get em for about $800-$1000 recondidioned
