latley ive noticed my diff has been making a repetative knocking noise when I am off the accelerator below 50kmh.. anyone have any ideas what this might mean?
If its shagged im thinking about going a 3.45 mini spool, any objections? or troubles with these? |

Yeah, as far as I know mini-spool is illegal for road cars. Someone may be able to clarify this. 3.45 LSD from an XR6 might be your better option.

mini spools are illegal for road use, yes.
Is your car a manual or an auto? Mini spool aint bad, Ive got one in my car (on ptivate roads ofcourse), its a pain in the a** for 3 point turns, you leave tyre on the ground just from turning around. An LSD might be a better option. Either that,or have an open wheel hemisphere sitting handy. Cheers

the car is an auto, so by the sounds of it my diff is probably on it's way out..?? maybe a xr lsd would be a better option.. ?

my LSD was makin some nice knockin noises on my trip to sydney on monday.
fluid change fixed that right up

the diff in my el monty ghia was making a slight clunking noise on decelleration under 50kmh, ended up being the old fluid. it was worse after high speed driving.

How do you change the fluid?? is it a hard job or easy? Ive never done it before.. How much and where could I get an LSD conversion done somewhere on the south coast or sydney way?? Thinking of going a 3.45 xr6 diff.. do ya change just the centre or would it be easier to get a whole diff?? |

The decision between whole diff and centre really depends on how dirty you like getting. Changing the centre is good, cos you get to have a look at your internals and see if there's anything suspicious. The centre change is not that hard, especially if you're not taking the hemisphere apart and just sticking in a new one.
The oil change is simple, undo drain bolt down the bottom, liquid which smells like every little particale in it is taking a s**t, pours out, and then you undo the big a** bolt, and pour new liquid in there, until you can feel it with you're finger through the big hole, or it starts to pour out. Not if you put an LSD hemisphere in, LSD oil needs to be used or you'll wreck the LSD. If change hemisphere's, you need to undo the drain bolt, let fluid drain out, then undo the casing from teh diff, (1/2" I think bolts all round except for the drain bolt), then you take off your wheels, undo your callipers, take the calipers off, and then you undo the back plate to give yourself more room. After that undo the flat head bolt which is the only thing that holds your disc brake on at this point, then yonk the disk off... might require some..umm.. motivation. After that point there's 4 bolts holding your axel on, which you take off, and then pull, and pull on your axel until it slides out. You don't need to take it out all the way, just enough to clear the diff centre. Now back to the centre, you need to the undo the bearng bolts (2 on each side of the hemishpere), the caps do come off. From here it is a matter of prying, and if you're lucky and your diff didn't get hit from the side like mine did (stupid gutters), then it shouldn't be too bad, but will still require a pinch bar, or a BIG screwdriver or something... Then once thats out, stick new one in, bash it in using a piece of wood, or something that isn;t going to damage it, and from there its the reversal, just fill up with LSD oil, and you're sweet. As for changing the whole diff, disk to disk... It requires you to undo everything attached (driveshaft, handbrake, brakes, trailing arms, watts link (on sedans), everything).. and then get the old out, roll the new one under, and bolt everything back up, feed more brake fluid in, and bleed/flush it through. The whole diff is ALOT heavier than a hemishpere... although don't underestimate the weight of a hemisphere. So see which one you'd rather do.. both are not hard and are more time consuming than anything. Good luck, and sorry for the long post.
