I'm possibly going to either get a secondhand EL 3.45lsd, or get a powertrax and 3.45 installed in my diff. While i was getting information, i was quoted the following for work to my diff:

$242 R/R
$800 rebuilt lsd
$195 axle bearings
$300 crownwheel & pinion 3.45
$500 overhaul

~$2000 total

Sounds very expensive to me.

I payed less than that (~1600) to get a supplied diff, LSD rebuilt/tightened, new bearings seals, shimmed etc. (the works) and installed in my GT-P drive in drive out. Swapping diffs in the IRS rear ends is a lot harder than on the live axle ELs (I've done that before).

Can I ask why the IRS is harder? I would of thought that dropping the axels off the centre housing and then removing that would be easier....

To change anything in an IRS diff, the entire diff housing has to come out. You cannot remove the diff hat and play with centres like in an E Series.

Rollin and I have the fun job of doing this to fit a Lokka to my AU XR8

And to remove the diff, you have to drop the entire IRS cradle.

I use Southern Defferentials in Phillip. The guy there's a Ford nut, so treats us well.

If you just need a diff built, and do the remove/install yourself the Diff Dr. in Fyshwick is good too.

Bugger that, just get one second hand for $250 or less and fit it yourself!

Did you consider a Powertrax?

You mean a whole axle assembly? What chance the lsd is any good on an EL XR6?

By-the-by there is a blue EL XR6 for sale locally, has the nice twin round headlights, but the dealer is asking $4900.

Yeh whole axle. I bought one (EF XR6) the other day for $250 and fitted it in an afternoon with 130,000kms. The same bloke has another one for sale now on ebay for $225 with higher kms (EL XR6).
But if you're going to spend that much on a diff I'd suggest a lokka and diff gears off ebay which are around $100-150

I'm going to find out how much a powertrax will cost, my impression is i would need to import it direct from america. They are smoother and quieter than the lokka/lock-right.

Yes, but 2 failed attempts vn get the correct part from America by a mate turned me off getting one so i went for a 4WD Systems lokka instead

to get a standard LSD recuild you should be looking under $1000 for an e series.

Thats including bearing and everything, there are a few places in sydney that quote those sort of prices. for a saving of over $1000 I'd be jumping in the car and getting the work done interstate.

Problem with fitting 2nd hand lsd's is you have no isea what condition they are in until you drive it. with an e series, you probably have a 50:50 change thats its either good, or rooted. if the latter then you will again spend the money getting it rebuilt.

Do it right the first time.

From memory the lokka is about $600, so is cheaper than rebuilding an lsd, but will probably hurt resale. I think Tocchi said to me that he got new diff gears and a lokka installed for around $1200, not sure though. Might not have got new wheel bearings.

A powertrax might not be much more expensive than a lokka, depending in part on the exchange rate, which is not so good now compared to 6 mths ago. And unlike the lokka it shouldn't reduce resale.
