hey people, my ba xr8 ute has done 108,000 kms and i havent owned it for a year and recently had to replaced the tailshaft because the rear uni-joint locked up. however i do alot of freeway use and recently i have been hearing the diff whine. the faster i go the louder it is. i rang a mechanic and he said its a common problem with the ba's but he wasnt sure how to fix it or what it would be worth. any ideas? and also would the rear uni locking up have anything to do with the diff playing up? i have done a few 1000km's since that happend tho

hiya, at work, i've seen HEAPS of BA/BF's come in for a diff rebuild under warranty, most of them are around 40,000kms... you've done well to get to 108,000kms!!!

But Yes, BA diff's are s**t.

Ford should of stuck to the BG diff ..

Laticia.

I would imagine a uni lockup would do damage to the diff housing/Bearings?

nothing to do with the housing, will require new diff gears which arent cheap. Id go to ford with the problem. Even though your out of warranty, they know there was a problem with the diffs, they might replace the gears with out charging labour.

well i got my car back from the mechanics. they pulled the diff out and sent it up to albury ( im not sure where) to the specialists and they replaced a bearing but there wasnt much damage to the gears and sent it back and my mechanic replaced an axle bearing and all up cost me $1370 so that wasnt too bad i guess. just got to take it easy for 500 km and only half throttle and not over 80km/h

BA/BF Ute diffs are really bad news unfortunately. 4 of Our utes at work have had diff bearing changes and another 2 are starting to get noisy. I guess sometimes these things just get to be a problem that is too much for FORD to fix?

Carrier bearings are cheap(chinese) in ba/bf and under warranty ford replace them with the same crap! Ask for Timkin or better quality bearings and they last alot longer.

We sell genuine Ford at work and they are OZ made. It isn't so much the Bearings as the bad design of the Diff. My AU XR6 has 150,000 klms on it and the diff is starting to sing to me. :)

I have to get some diff quietener from Supercheap and give it a go. Says it is suitable for LSD so, worth a try.
