My EL XR6 diff whine is getting VERY annoying...its not just at certain speeds or anything, its ALWAYS there...gets higher and louder when speedling up...it is just as loud as the engine sound if not more so...motorway driving is a nightmare...
What is the general cause of this? Is it difficult to repair whatever the problem is? Im pretty decent with cars, can do most things, but have never touched the diff or tranny before. Anyone know much about this? Cheers! |

Does it get worse when you back off? If it is constant with speed then it could be wheel or diff bearings or it could even be tyres. First stop would be to check the Oil level in the diff.

but if your going say 100km/h then back off acceleration but still coasting at that speed does the noise stay same or go quiet?

you have stuffed bearing then, when i got my $350 wrecker special LSD put in my front left bearing went WHILE they had the car so i thought it was the diff till someone hung their head out my passenger window and ID'd the sound as a wheel bearing

how lowd is it and can you actually feel the bearings mashing at under 30km/h? Looks like your planetarey bearings have gooone and its time for a rebuild center. Lookin at between 4 and 1300 bucks there depending on who does the work.

Yea, I suppose its worth redoing them, even if its not them, may as well do it!
Its a simple enough job... |

just take it to a suspension place and get one of theyre free safety inspections, thus getting them to identify the noise

Was going to replace the rear wheel bearings (yea i know they aren't wheel bearings a** uch), but after reading gregories, it seems a press and press plate is needed to replace the bearings...too much effort...
Might at least pull them out and cleana nd regrease them. See how they look. |
