Is there a differance in length between a manual tailshaft and an auto tailshaft from EL XR6's.
Im wanting to put an alloy tailshaft on my XR6 as for some reason it has a steel one currently fitted. By the way if anyone has an alloy tailshaft from an XR6, please let me know. also Did EL fairmont Ghias come with alloy ones?

manual and shafts, are the same lengths.
howevers wagons and fairlanes are longer than the sedans. the whole alloy vs steel shaft, seems a bit debatable., as for half the cases explaining alloy, ther's contradicting cases, so hard to say.

Apparantly all Xr6's have alloy one's but i have a EF and ED both with steel ones. The alloy one is 5KG lighter approximately, so it's not realy a big deal.

have anything to do with the fact once you reach over 180 in a non xr your tailshaft or something goes and you crash and die
where as the xr's are allowed over 180km

Just to throw a spanner in the works... Is there a difference in the distance between the end of the auto box & diff compared to the distance between the manual box & diff. When I changed to a manual gearbox, I took the steel tailshaft to get straightened & balanced. For some reason, the tailshaft had to be shortened by 15mm. It's the original tailshaft too.
If the tailshafts lengths are supposed to be the same, could the tailshaft have stretched?

possibly when it changed over the box moved a little bit more than normal and i remember somethign like the tailshaft can be shorter than required but a little to long then everything f**k up
so possibly same thing

E series manual tailshaft Yolks have the first 10mm or so of the splines missing. AFAIK the tailshafts are the same length. I am guessing the shorter splines allow the shaft to enter the gearbox a little more before bottoming out.

This is exactly the info I came here for. From what i'm reading in this thread, I should be able to put my EF 5 speed into my NC fairlane without needing any strange tailshaft modification? I've got a sportsman so it has an alloy shaft and i'd like to keep that if possible..

No way. Not unless you have 2.77 diff gears....

Yehhh.. with 3.45s, 200kms/hr in 4th = 6,000rpm. 3.23s a touch lower @ about 5700 rpm.. 3.08s @ 5300, so at 230 you'd be doin 6100 in 4th with 3.08s.

There are very good reasons that ford put the alloy shafts on the EF/L XRs, some LWB's and the carbon fibre reinforced ones on the ELGT's. We have Datamine on this forum with first hand experience of a tailshaft failure on an EL, do a search for it if you like.

All Long wheel base have alloy shafts. |
