I changed the brake fluid in an 01 model AUII today for a customer.
This is what it looked like ( old diesel engine oil came to mind). It was a taxi cab, but the mob that owned it must have ditched it after a T-bone crash, and they didn't fix it properly either. The drivers floor is rippled like a low tide beach. This is what the fluid looked like, before and after. Unfortunately, the brake fluid won't look like that ( clean ) in about 2 months time, as the new fluid will lift the old crud out of the master cyl assembly, and will spread to the fluid in the resivoir.

Did the bleeders have rubbish clogging the holes up ??
They're always good fun taking them out and hand spinning a drill bit through them.

Luckily the AU's have bigger holes than the E series bleeders, but I still removed them, buffed & cleaned them, applied anti-sieze compund to the threads, and vacuum bled the brakes, then clamp the hose, and push the pistons back in while under vacuum. When the system is in good nick, the pistons go back in on their own. When all done, just pump the pedal ( 1/4 strokes, not full strokes ) till brakes are out, then suck out the fluid in the res, coz it gets dirty from the reaction ports.

I must say I have seen a few cars that have had that type of brake fluid
What never ceases to amaze me is WHY people NEVER seem to want to check brake fluid? Most car manufacturers recommend flushing the system once a year but some NEVER bother to do it and when they do, they usually forget to take the little plastic switch in the M/Cyl and bend the little pin. Oh well... |
