Hi guys, i have a terrible crunching or scraping noise coming from my brakes (im pretty sure) as it occurs when i am braking. when i am driving at speed it doesnt make any sounds, but when i am comming to a complete stop it starts to make the grinding or crunching sound. Could my pads be so worn that it is like a metal on metal noise?
If so does anyone have a walkthrough on removing and installing discs and pads? Thanks heaps guys Ps: i drive an el fairmont ghia |

This happened in the workshop yesterday, and it was because the rotors were wrong.
We put them on thinking they were the exact same size etc. Perhaps you've got the wrong rotors? Either that or you've got something stuck in between your pads and rotors.

oh ok i didnt even think there could be something stuck. Ive had the rotors on for a good 2 years now so it would be weird for them to just suddenly start making that noise wouldnt it? and how do i remove the pads enough to see if something is stuck between them and the rotor?

Pull the wheels off and have a look.....if it needs pads, then make sure the caliper slides are free, and change the brake fluid too.

souds like you got a tiny stone caught in the pad, my eb was makeing the same noise when i got it, changed the pads and machined the rotors and it's all quiet and smooth now but gotta do the rears some idiot at the mechanics done the hand brake up and went for a drive cooked the fluid and pads in the rear now the rears dnt work at all so it's flat surface and park or hill brick uder wheel and park.

thats unlucky mate no good at all. So how do i get the brake pads off to have a look if there is anything in there? Never really touched brakes b4 lol

undo he 2 bolts holding the calliper on and slide it upwards till it pops off then pull the pas out and have a look.

probably 2 years ago swc, possibly a bit longer. They shouldnt be too badly gone should they?
Papa smurf suggested it could be my wheel bearing stuffed, i am leaning away from a brake issue now as yesterday the same grinding noise happened when i came to a complete stop like it does on occassion, but when i accelerated slowly the noise was still there, so even when the brakes werent on it made it. So wheel bearing seems more likely at the moment. Any ideas? |

At 2 years, assuming that the car is an every day driver, depending on your braking habits and the type of pad used, I think there is a good chance that your pads are shagged.
If you have never done this before, get someone who has to help you, also get a Workshop Manual. If you have been getting this noise fro a while then there is a good chance that your discs will be scored and will need machining. Depending on the wear on discs and the thickness, they may need to be replaced. If Papa is correct and there is a good chance he is after your post in the other thread, you will need to replace the wheel bearings and cones. Again if you have never done this before, get some one that knows to help you or pay someone to do it. I would recommend using Timken Bearing kit, one of the best around IMO. |

Thanks a lot for that SWC, i know i will have to get my discs machined at the least as i have a distinct brake shudder at the moment. Now to find someone willing to lend a helping hand!

i now my handbrake in the eb used to stick slightly especially when stopping and starting. i wound the buggers off untill the hand brake didnt work then retightened it till it grabbed enough to hold the car, that could possibly be an issue haveing a sticking pad. not a very common thing to happen but depending on the type of brand the pad is it could just have a handfull of brake dust stuck there.

found the problem guys, the inner brake pad was absolutely shagged and ive taken a layer off the disc/rotor, hows that for free machinning haha. So if anyone needs their discs machined just put ur rotor on my car and my pads will take an inner layer off for ya ha. all seriousness now gotta find out whether they can be machined or if i need a new disc, ive alrdy got the new pads so all shuld b sweet soon enuff.
Money is a bit tight at the moment, but would it be recommended that if i need to replace one disc that i should replace both? or it doesnt matter too much? Thanks SWC and everyone else for posting in the thread much appreciated |
