Hi,
Just bought a dl ltd which seems to be in really good condition mechanically. However changing through the gears to slow down it just seems to stay in drive. Is this normal? it will stay in gears when accelerating but as soon as you stop accelerating it will just go back down to idling as if its just in drive. Puting it in 3 on the highway sometimes works but nothing else does. It will also randomly clunk slightly into second when driving normally but this hardly ever happens so it doesnt bother me too much. Any advice appreciated. |

could be a converter issue sounds a bit like what happen to a mates commodore. he would be driving down the highway for example and when he backed off the car came off stall and just idoled along. turned out to be a busted converter. good luck

If it's a converter which it sounds like it is, it's unbolting the trans, sliding it out of the way and changing the converter.
Not very hard if you have a decent jacking height and a spare set of hands.

Could also be your Trans Selector Position Switch. They go all the time and then you cant manually select 3,2,or 1 - it defaults to "d"

what type of box? FMX?.... check the kick down.. is it still connected... it may need a few bends to sort things out?..
Could be the convertor.. but i would think it aint going to go very far if its playing up.... To change that you need to pull the box off.. put the new one in.. thats the big round lookng thing bolted onto the flywheel, thats connected to the gear box... does a lot of spinning n stuff... if you want a stall or performance one.. maybe $600... but wreckers have em cheap.. make sure its clean inside.. give it a good diesel flush..!! Big job.. but someone has to do it!!

try to take a photo and post it.. we will figure it out...
i can spot a fmx.. more than likely it will be one.. The kick down is the bar from the carby... and goes round the fire wall to the box... cant miss it. Unless you know what your doing get a mechanic to do it... if its out a wack than it may cause hassels...

it does select the gear though. you can feel it change when you select a lower gear but the rev's only go up bout 200rpm if anything. it works fine wen u hold it in gear while accelerating. it just won't do anything when you back off the accelerator. Can't think of any better way to explain it sorry.
