Clean wheels + hard trip down the Illawarra HWY (Canberra to Wollongong) = Dirty wheels.

dunno about brake pads melting, but you MAY have a leaking grease cap on that wheel!

i am sure they will melt with an oxy torch... could also be a build up of brake pad dust and u have got some water on the wheel and it has pooled in the 1 spot

and trust me, the friction material on the pads WILL NOT melt untill it's at a high enough temperature where it would probably spontaneously combust anyway, i've seen pads that have been hammered so badly they're bent and there's an impression of the piston in the backing plate of the pad, but all the heat did to the pad itself was to make the friction material go brittle....
i've also heard of a set of lucas pads getting the front brakes/wheels so hot the plastic valve caps melted!

Interesting, I'm sure it is something like pooling dust, but there was no water involved - dry day.
Interesting none the less. It cleaned up teh same as if it were just dust. Just a strange pattern. I've seen some other strange patterns of dust too - spotting for example after a few laps of Mt. Panorama. 
@Interceptor, I run Lucas pads and DBA slotted rotors, a great combination.

hey mate - i have a spot nearly the same as yours on my GT rims - i htink it is just the dust pooled up in water - im not worried about it!! but you couldnt have been driving that hard for the pads to melt!! Just think race cars never have pads melt on em i just think i cant really happen in everyday driving even if you are going hard!

thier brake pads are made of a completely different material. And yes, he does drive that hard!!!

Its probably related to some sort of cleaner you have previously applied to your wheel, or tyre shine or something. Although the wheel may look clean, theres probably still some chemical residue on the wheel, and the dust is just sticking to that area.

Also my old man was saying today it can be done due to a little bit of dog pee on your wheels!! cause thats what he said had happened to mine!!!
