Hi,
Ive had an 3.45 LSD put in from an ED xr6 1yr ago it had 250,000k's on it now its 280ks, its singleing out realy bad now its really annoying, it cant move in the wet! It doesnt whine, or make any noises, it just doesnt spin 2 wheels anymore, like to used to , i was told i needed the clutch/s replaced, is this expensive? (probly yes) Do it need a whole new rebuild? Thanks any post is appreciated

Not sure on cost, but you can replace just the clutche cones, so you won't need a rebuild per se (ie you can keep your crown and pinion gears etc).

BTR use a cone clutch in their diffs.
You can just replace the cones without rebuilding the whole diff - sometimes the old ones can be machined, shimmed & lapped in and be re-used again. They were around $70 each new to buy + the labour to set it up. |

Get the diff hot, change the oil.....try that first...it works sometimes. Use Castrol LSX 90.

YOU CANNOT MACHINE THE LSD CARRIER IF THE CONE'S ARE BOTTOMING OUT.
THE TROUBLE WITH THE CONE DESIGN IS THAT IT MACHINES ITSELF INTO THE LSD HOUSING . TO MACHINE THE HOUSING IT PLACES THE CONES MORE APPART IN THE CARRIER. MACHINING IS A QUICK CARYARD FIX.( WILL NOT LAST ) DO IT PROPERLY NOT THE CHEEP WAY IT WILL BE LIKE NEW BETTER OF WITH A NEW LSD HOUSING ,THE OLD CONES IF THEY ARE OK. THEY ARE HARDER THAN THE HOUSING. |

OK, i have a guy on ford mods offer to rebuild it for $200, seems pretty good, $140 for two clutches sounds alright. I dont wanna do a half a*** job and have to fix it up again soon. I give it a hard time so its gota be done right. I use Castrol LX 90 in it already, (fully synthetic costs the earth) so i dnt think change the oil would help.
Thanks guys

Define hard time? If you just mean drive it hard on the street than you will be fine, but if it sees track use or you hit the skidpan I would recommend a lokka/detroit locker/KAAZ or even a 9in (although conversions are painful).

A Lokka (cheaper) or KAAZ are the go. |

Quite true, I would only use one if it was a dedicated drag/burnout car too as too heavy with heavy internal gear, but for these uses is probably your most viable option if you don't want a locker variant for whatever reason.

Sorry been off for last few days, I dont do track time, i just give it the berries all the time from lights (im sure it loves it!) spins it up, do standstills, and hang it out sideways alot. I dunno if thats really hard on it, but i use it lets just say. I was thinking about a lokka... dunno much about it. i just want it tight again like how it was when i first put it in. il look up KAAZ just for sumthing 2do.
