mine is f**k
plain and simple... from the looks of it, it seems like some sort of a drum system (ie, separate to the rear calipers) that the h/bn engages... the gregorys manual is f**k useless for the handbrake, and enough is enough. i rest on park on a hill, not the brakes!!!!!!!!!! ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know something about the AU handbrakes. There the most FKN useless thing in the world
Had mine adjusted/serviced by Ford under warranty 4 times. Ok for a few days then squeels and scrapes likes theres no tomorrow, then it decides just not to work. Took it to a local mechanic this time (only last week). Watched him adjust it from the rear and the cabin. It's working again, but it still squeels and scrapes. He put an adjustment bracket on the cable to shorten it and get some extra pull out of it. Next time it will need a new cable, it's streched to the max. The mechanic reckons that Ford where charging me $40 for a handbrake service and only adjusting it from the cabin. The bolt had been done up to the max. They have streched the cable to it's limits. I should have been more aware of this when the car was still under warranty. I would have demanded a new cable (at their expense) instead of going through all the trouble's I've had. If there is any better way, or if anyone has a fix, please let me know. My handbrake has been driving me up the wall for years. When my car was auto it was no problem, but now I've done the T5 manual conversion and I need a reliable handbrake that works

 Back the cable off all the way at the lever and then adjust h brake shoes thru hole in disc face. Adjust shoes until u can move the little lever on rear of disc 7mm using screw driver. Once adjustment is correct at discs adjust cable till lifts 7 clicks. Hope not too confusing

yep i know how you feel on this subject, sometimes if someone dodgy workshop boys adjusts your handbrake or replaces the shoe they might loose one of the two pins that sit inside the adjusters for the shoes, this pin is only applied when you engage the handbrake, the pin pushes the adjusters out, without the pin 10mm to 15mm of cable can be pulled on each side without no effect to push the brake shoe, sometimes if your removing the shoe the adjusters will fall out and this is where that pin can go missing, the other thing is handbrake cables do stretch easy on the AU's making it impossible to get right

i dont particularly care if its quite "right" but i would like some sort of a handbrake...
moral of the story is pull it apart, new cables, (can you get new shoes?), check the shoes/pins and pray? what a guess... i havent pulled it apart and guessed the shoes right! i dont like the idea of taking it to ford, theyll have one look at my rears which are now slicks and say "its from the burnouts. it will be expensive to fix. oh by the way, you need a new engine and diff"

the trick to fixing the noise is to pull the rear disc off and use sandpaper or a gasket widget to clean all the s**t off the inside of the handbrake drum, and re-adjust the handbrake

"Ford" did the same thing to my AUIII XR8, i wount say where i took it but some where in the south east of Melbourne... I have to fix mine now too...
