Ok, I've got what I think might be a stuffed rear universal joint...I hope. Started happening the other day, not sure when cause the music would have been drowning out the sound. It's coming from the rear, it's a kinda knocking sound that is varible with speed and you can just feel it when you put your hand in front of the rear seat, it goes away under acceleration and under moderate braking, so it's only there at a constant speed. I've checked the swaybar and all looks good there.
I still havn't managed to get under the car and fully check over things. How do you check uni joints? Should there be any play, all that sorta stuff. Or even worse could it be the diff? Or anything else it could be. It had new springs and shocks about 5000kms ago that I installed and bars. Thanks Ben |

Try to check it at ride height, so you can see if anything is hitting somewhere, and look for signs of this. Check the exhaust tailpipe too.

So do people agree that it's most likely uni joints? I'm leaning that way, do they give any warning before they start playing up? what else should be replaced with uni joints?
Thanks Ben |

If the UJ's were worn enough to clunk there would be a horrible vibration from about 60k's and higher in the driveline. The UJ's may be worn but im thinking diff.

Yeah after talking with my dad, he said the same thing, i'm now thinking diff, it's due for a transmission service so maybe i'll get them to look at the diff for me, I also noticed on the rear of the drive shaft there is a round thing attached to it, maybe a weight or something, also it looks like there used to be another one as there's a shiny spot where one may have been, could this cause the problem?

If it were my car I'd be checking that the lower shock mount bolts were tight, and then the upp' & lwr control arm bolts, like really tight with a breaker bar and socket.

I might check that as I recently replaced shocks, I noticed it went away when I went around a tight corner. I think I'll check bearings too.

Ok well the noise is now gone, I tightened everything in the rear end, nothing really seemed too loose...except for my wheel nuts, not sure if it was them but I'm 80% sure it was, what worries me is I've been driving around for probably over a month and only in the last week has it started making the noise, oh well my silly mistake.
