Ok. I've just hushed up my exhaust system and fitted brand new tyres to my Fairmont. Really much quieter now. But what remains is a small amount of driveline noise, like a really bad tyre, but isn't, which kind of sounds like it's coming from one of the front wheels. Shouldn't be, because brakes are all good, nothing seized, and good wheel bearings.
Yet, this noise remains.

My question is, what would be the first to look at with these cars. It used to tow stuff every now and then. So I'm wondering about the auto, prop shaft, or diff. Could it be simpler?

Possible front wheel bearing or possible radial noise from tyres. You say its from the front so it cant be driveline. Does it change with revs or speed?

I would also suspect the tyre noise or the bearings if you say its coming from the front. Have a close listen, and as joolz said, the answer also depends on if its either rev or speed related.

Yes speed related. Only sounds like it's from the front, could be rear.

I really don't think it's tyres, there only 3 days old, and very quiet. It was present with the old tyres too.
The front wheel bearings were repacked 3 days ago also.

The noise has been present for a few years now.

I think you should have a close listen... better yet get someone else to listen. Its hard to say... could be the disc scraping the pads? how good are your discs/brakes?
Can't really think of anything else atm.
Oh and by the way, tyres can be bought noisy. Maybe its just the way they're made.

Discs at front machined, new ones at rear, and new pads all around

Brakes are smooth and without noise. Nothing is seized as far as I know, although the drivers side front one was found to be siezed. And front wheel bearings repacked.

The noise has been present through 2 sets of tyres, and has always come from the same approx area.
My sisters EL hasn't done it through 2 sets of tyres, even when her tyres were bald.

I would love to fix this thing as it's been there since I've owned the car.
My guess is auto trans, but you just can't guess with these things.

I might get a Dyno tune, if I put it on a dyno, I can at least see which end it's coming from I suppose, to narrow it down a bit

Re packing a worn wheel bearing wont fix it. I would replace them and make sure they are adjusted right. Only about $60 a set.
