I've heard that its better for an auto transmission
to use 'third' instead of 'drive' when driving around town or in traffic...... Good idea or an old wives tale...?? What do you guys do...?? |

Leave it in drive and let the computer pick the best gear. But then I'm a lazy old f@rt.
A friend of mine (transmission specialist) told me to tow in 3rd as it was better for the trans??

Around town you are probably not likely to exceed 80, so 3rd would be good.

I use 3rd for amything under 80 km. drive for anything over. I think the manual says to use 3rd for city driving.

That would be to stop it from constantly kicking down & shifting back up every time you get on & off the throttle, wearing out the tranny quicker.

Scott from WA (RIP) always told me that below 60km/h it's best to leave in 3rd. He also told me something about whens best to have it in power or normal/economy, but I've forgotten.

Exactly ... also helps a little with in-gear acceleration from lower speeds. Towing is definitely better in 3rd (occasionally I use "D" though in the freeway when towing on dead flat ground ... other than that ... it's 3rd). Also I shift back to 3rd out of "D" when I have cruise selected and coming up to a decent hill ... just makes for a smoother climb (without the auto labouring ... then backing down 2 gears when it's too late).

This might be the wrong thing to do, but I don’t really care to much for my auto. I leave mine in D just about always, when I'm sitting on 60k I flick the power/economy on then off, and the auto will drop in to 4th. Looking at the data logging, doing this is dropping my injector duty cycle, so it has to be better on fuel..

When driving in the city, I always had mine in D and in "power" this stopped it from continually dropping back when you are on/off the accellerator in city traffic.

i always drive in third when in heavy traffic or 60km areas when the air con is on. my eb will run extremly hot when in drive, where as if im in third it is noticibly cooler . i think it something to do with load and and the water pump running quicker. weird i know but its true

ur clutch fan is probably buggered nv..
yeh i tihnk 3rd uses less moving parts(like 4th in a manual) so thats why its better. its 1:1 ratio.

do you get faster acceleration from standing stop when using 123D or just leaving it in drive? this has always confused and bothered me.
keeping in mind i have a shift kit

It'd be the same. You'd only shift it manually if you wanted it to rev longer than the computer defined shift-points, right?
