:D Hey guys, looking at ads to buy another EA & saw a EA-1989 with 3 speed auto.
Did the early EA's have a 3 speed auto or is it a typo?

It appears so PIMP LTD.....All I know is the 1990 EA has factory 4 Speed Electronic transmision.
Funny thing about that...I must have a elctric overdrive in these 4 speed auto's cause if you stick it in Drive & take off it changes gears 4 times.....think about that...4 times..its in 1st when in drive so the first change is into 2nd & so on!
Also I think you will find only the 4 Speeds have a Power/Economy switch on console.

yep only the 4 speeds get the eco switch. EA1's are 3 speed.

That 4th gearchange you feel is probably the converter locking up.

 Converter locking up....Hmmm dont like the sound of that
yeah well what ever it does it drops in revs like an electric overdrive eh!

Dan !...On a similar note.....would my perfect EA 4 speed auto fit onto a EA that has the 3 speed auto on it?
Would the bolt holes be in same place for a start?

Converter locking up is good. It cuts out the slip that it would normally have giving a lower rpm for a given speed.

I think the bolt holes might be a bit different. The hard part would be fitting the electrical bits to get the 4 speed to work.

The 3 speed is hydraulic.

There is a lockup clutch on the converter so when you get up to cruising speed it locks up the converter so you dont get any slip in the converter and therefore reduces revs and improves fuel economy.

Damn it i need to learn to type faster
