whats involved in changing a ea from a 3 speed auto to a later 4 speed auto.

When I was researching this for my DA IIRC you need to modify the crossmember..

Other than that you'll need:

BTR (duh)
Wiring looms
Computer to suit your engine and the BTR
Shifter surround
Instrument cluster (for the Power jewel)


I think the bellhousings are compatible, I'm not too sure if the drive shaft length is the same either..

I have read it's a decent sized job because of the electrics involved with the 4 speed that the 3 speed didn't have.

On the other hand if you convert to T5 you dont' have to worry *hint hint* :twisted:

i would love to but its not my car.

another question what would i expect to pay for a 3 speed auto and a 4 speed auto?.

hey jonothon, i'm in the same boat at the moment with my DA S1 with a shagged trans (just no reverse)

I'm also looking into what's involved and interested to hear from others that have done the conversion, or even put a manual in.
