G'day all,
I'm currently studying away from home on the Gold Coast, and my EA has been in storage at home in Hervey Bay for the last 4months. Now the last time I was up, I reconnected the battery and tried to reverse her out, but it took a fair amount of the right pedal (almost half way) before she would move out. The throttlebody is opening, so it wasn't a problem with cable, but the handbrake did feel a little funny, so maybe the handbrake cable is playing up/seized. However when I did finally get out I noticed a fair puddle of trans fluid on the ground. Quickly killed ignition, jumped under and there was a massive amount of tranny fluid coated around the back of the gearbox/tailshaft connection. Now I concluded from my Gregorys that this would be the transmission extension housing seal, and was told that to replace that I would have to drop box out and change, and was recommended to replace gearbox. Now my questions:- 1.) Do I really need to drop the box to change this seal? 2.) Would it be worthwhile/difficult to change gearbox to 4sp? Sorry for the long post, but I'm going back up on the holidays to bring back to coast, and was wondering if I could achieve this in a week. Thanks in advance.

if u havnt alraedy fixed it, no u dont have to drop the box, just the driveshaft. a long flat head driver will remove the old seal and a large socket the same diameter as the seal to fit the new one. just mark on both ends of the shaft the position it came out to ensure the system balance is kept.

Ah excellent that sounds a lot easier than dropping the box. So it wouldnt be much harder than changing the uni joints would it?
However if I was looking at a 4sp conversion, besides the box, computer and I think another cable that runs from the 2nd TPS on the throttlebody back to gearbox or computer, that would be all I need? I read that the 3spd/4spd tailshafts are the same length. Cheers

maybe same lenght but the slip flange may differ, the neck of the slip flange should be around 30mm from the extension casing seal when car sitting.

Thanks alot for the help, I had a friend replace the seal, and he got to it from underneath after removing tailshaft. I'll stick with the 3spd for a bit longer.
