Hey guys iv been through 2 lsds in the fairmont now both suffering from (i'm guessing) the same issue.
That is when put under severe 'strain' the diff instead of acting as a lsd only operates as single peg.
What causes a lsd to sh** itself like this?. I'v read that they have like a clutch like mechanism that allows them to give both wheels traction. (please dont quote me on this) If this is so can it be replaced, by the average home mechanic who has a sh** load of time and the patience to learn and save for the tools necessary to do it.

Cheers guys for any advice or comments that can help me narrow this down.

Just to note i have 2 lsds soon to be 3 that i can play around with all 3 are 3.23 ratios i think.
(possibility of scavenging parts maybe?). Also all the diffs have had their fluids changed and topped up to the correct level to eliminate this as a possibility.

'Limited Slip Diff'

If you want to put it under 'severe strain' this is what you'll end up with.

Upgrade the diff or modify it to suit your 'driving' needs.

Throwing washers and installing bolts inside the cone springs will 'make' the LSD tighter, you can also do Figure-8's backwards to 'lap' the cones in. but at the end of the day these diffs aren't exactly the best to be thrashed.

they are a metal on metal cone setup. no clutches. what happens is the housing and the cone are tapered and they wear over time so instead of the housing and cone faces touching the cones ends bottom out so they just spin freely. causing them to legger. i'm getting a diff rebuilt currently and the housing had to be machined so the cones contacted properly. and it's also being shimmed up F.T so she won't leg

Guess ill be on the look out for an eb2 onwards lsd. Any idea on prices for a freshly recoed one? Don't really want some guy in the shop trying to bs me around.

Thanks for all the help.

well. that bust that myth. the diff guy pulled down my EA diff. it had 28 spline 4 pinion centre. thought EA's had a 25 spline 2 pinion centre. LSD's must be different

Was the diff from a 3spd auto or 4spd auto EA? Maybe that makes a difference?

Cheers
