I have scored an ea T5 in perfect condition, along with a genuine ford V8 T5 bellhousing for a very small fee, Now I need to work out what other goodies I will require to have a smooth box change without having to chase up parts on the day
So far I know I need an extension pilot bush 3 bolt starter thrust race/carrier clutch cable console surround for manual trans Now for the things I am not sure about, The ecu, I hear you can use a resistor to fool the ecu to "think" it is always in gear. I have a clevo steel flywheel and 11" clutch to suit the same spline ,will this fit or does the efi 5L use a "special" flywheel. and finally will the auto crossmember fit, or does it need to be modified? anyone who has done the conversion, tips will be greatly appreciated thanks: kenny

The 6 Cyl (EA) T5 has a different length input shaft. You might need to change it, or or change your bellhousing. You could also consider selling your new box, and purchasing the v8 item?

I'd hate to tell you mate, but I cant see that box lasting very long, unless you're going to be really nice to it. Or its been rebuilt and heavily strengthened.
Plus they had a very short 1st gear (3.5:1) compared to a V8 box (2.95:1). Not trying to ruin your day, but just letting you know the pitfalls if you havent thought of them. You will also need for your list: Clutch pedal pin (or whole pedal box). There is no where to hang a clutch pedal from the auto pedal box. Clutch pedals (V8's have a special pedal). Brake Pedal. Shifter boot (you dont need a special surround, its the same for auto and manual. Just the boot is obviously different). V8 flywheels are very hard to find. I cant tell you if the clutch will suit (I've only dont I6 T5 changes). But you can buy them from Ford, pretty cheaply. You dont need a starter, they are the same for an auto and manual. You will have some fun with the resistor trick on a V8. Do a search on here to learn exactly what to do. There are various tricks with the V8 ECU's that dont apply to an I6. I know on an I6, the crossmember is the same for auto and manual. I can only assume this applies with the V8. |
