Hey guys. As none of you would know (due to my lack of posting) my EA fairmont ghia is currently running a nice and tall 2.77 diff ratio with 5spd man. i wanted to get a set of 3.45 gears but its gonna cost way out of my budget.
Im after opinions on putting an EB or ED fairmont or xr6 rear end in mine. Is it worth doing? Being the similar models are the rear ends interchangable? and is there much difference between the EA 3spd ratio and the EB-ED 4spd ratio (enough for this to be a worthy project)? Finding another rear end is relatively do-able for me so thats not really an issue. Basically all im trying to find out is: - will these rear ends swap without any modifications to sway bars etc.? - is it worth it just for these gear ratio's? thanks to anyone who can help me.

yep same EA-ED, dunno about ratios tho
think 2.92 was standard tho in 4sp Auto (not 100%)

i've got a 2.92 with my factory 5spd. good fuel economy on the highway.
only thing you have to worry about is the later models had a 4 bolt flange on the diff to bolt to tail shaft where earlier ones had some other elaborately stupid setup.

there are a few differences.
1. is the tail shaft flange is different. you can swap the flange on the diff over or you can use the eb2/ed tailshaft .. 2..the lower trailing arm bushes are wider on eb2/ed. you can use the ea arms with spacers to fill the gap where it bolts up to the diff or you can fit the ed bushes to the rear of the lower arms.. otherwise its pretty straight forward.. ive done it. i swaped the tailshaft flang over and kept the ea tailshaft. the lower trailing arms i ground the spacer off the mounting point on the body and used the ed arms. |

also 6 cyl eb2 should have 3.23.(maybe 2.92 ) the v8 has 3.27
the ed 6 cyl has 3.08/3.23 and xr6/8 has 3.45.. |

theres should be a post for people who have changed them to discuss fuel economy change

the ed 6 cyl has 3.08/3.23 and xr6/8 has 3.45.. IIRC EB2 have 3.08 for 5 speed, 3.23 for auto? EA 5 speed = 2.92, 3 speed = 2.77, 4 speed 3.08. just a guess though, im not sure if its right.

thanks guys for makin this area a little bit clearer to me. So the assumption is that XR6's had the 3.45 gears? if so i will be keeping my eyes out for one. I guess its worth it for 3.23 gears as well out of the EB's. im just after a bit more ooomph in the acceleration department.
Without going too off topic, is it really worth the money for a nolathane bush kit? im 80/20 about handing $400odd over to those guys. I've seen them on ebay for $470. Is that the going rate for these kits?

4sp ratio is 3.08 any diff from an e series will fit in your car you can also get the diff center out of r31 pintaras which fit in your car there ratio is very close to 4.11 though

not all 4 spds are 3.08 ratio i forgot wagons are mostly 3.23 and then xrs are 3.45

my ea ghia is 3.23 LSD.
according to the good book the ratios are 2.77:1 2.92:1 3.08:1 3.23:1 so they came with one of those as standard fitment.

sorry to hijack the thread but rather than making another one my question is very similar...
i have an EA S 5 speed. It has the 2.92 diff ratio. I want to put in a 3.45 diff out of an xr6. Am i wiser to buy the whole thing and just swap it in or can I just buy the LSD center and that will give me my 3.45 ratios? Which is harder to put in? to quote from before, 1. is the tail shaft flange is different. you can swap the flange on the diff over or you can use the eb2/ed tailshaft .. 2..the lower trailing arm bushes are wider on eb2/ed. you can use the ea arms with spacers to fill the gap where it bolts up to the diff or you can fit the ed bushes to the rear of the lower arms.. if i get the tailshaft and lower trailing arm bushes out of the ed/eb xr6 3.45 diff, will this be a simple take out put in job aside from recalibrating the speedo? many thanks...

The EA is a 25 spine spine diff (the same diff that was given to the X series) so it can't take the 28 spine Xr6 diff.
You are best to buy the XR6 diff whole, around the $200-300 mark. |

you can use 3.45 gears in a ea 25 spline centre.. it just needs to have a 2.92 or lower ratio hemisphere..
you cant fit 3.45 on a 2.77 centre as the 2.77 ratio has a different offset in the hemisphere due to the larger pinion size.. but you can fit a 28 spline centre and axles into a ea housing.. but you are better of just doing a complete diff swap it would be easier.. |
