Hi all,
My EA (MPI, 4sp auto) seems to change gears way too early. What i mean by this is, it moves through the gears very quickly, the engine barely revs out. The only time it doesnt do this is if i put my foot flat to the floor. This seems to be the only way i can get some decent pickup... What would cause this? As in, could it be that my transmission is stuffed? I have just had it serviced, but im not very confident that the people did a good job... Could this have anything to do with it? |

hmmm... I would check the fluid.. but I would be more thinking solenoids. I think it's time for a manual conversion
Cheers

Thanks for the reply !!
Fluid level seems ok. Like i said, dont really trust the work the guys did on the service... Would LOVE a manual conversion, however dont have the money for one at the moment... 2nd, the last time i had the tranny serviced (not the dodgy time) the guys assured me that my transmission was in great condition considering age and mileage... How can i get the solenoids checked out? Just take it to a reputable transmission place and ask them to have a look for me? |

yeah, mainly.. problem been the money involved. Although I wouldn't jump onto it straight away. The transmission is electronically controlled, normally from within the ECU, in your case, it should be a seperate TCM (Transmission Control Module), this controls when and how the gearbox changes gears. I would check this first.. its simple tp check, I think its under your dash (not 100% sure), on the drivers side. You might have to ask someone with an EA. This thing might not be picking up a proper tach feed or something, and just changing ASAP.
Cheers

How do i check that the TCM is working properly?
Are there any simple tests i can do to check this? Does an ED have the same modue? Can it be replaced with an ED one ? |

EA to EB all had TCM's just make sure you get an I6 one as the V8 also had them (up to the ED). THe I6 ED and I think EBII they integrated all into the ECU.
They also have adifferent colour stickers on them, I have seen pink, yellow and green. pink is the s-pac/ghia one, thats the best one to get, the shift points are better, and a noticeable difference in power mode.

Check the throttle position sensor. Your TCU might need to re-learn this. Search here for procedure (I can't remember it)
