Hi peoples.
just a smallish question re '93 EB ABS brake system. is there any faults with it? is it a worthwhile upgrade?? complete system is going into a 1991 EB |

not worth it imo, early e series (eb/ed) abs is rather s**t, still works ok proving everything else is 100% .
i had my ed abs cause me to have an accident, my brakes still worked really good but always had a little bit more pedal travel than i was happy with.. anyway was drivng on a rutted section of road and had a celica pull infront and stop suddenly, i jumped on the brakes and because of the road surface the abs cut in, dropping brake pedal momentary, but due to the rutts there was no pedal recovery, basically the abs was to slow to recover from the first release, esentually within 3 or so pulses dropping the pedal to the floor resulting in a colision... if i had no abs i guarantee i would have stoped.. |

hmmm ... then how does one remove it AND have the car believe its still fitted??

That sucks, ironic though, I remember reading that the EB-ED ABS cycled so slow because it was designed for Australian road conditions, eg dirt and gravel. The slower cycle was supposed to give the the wheel more of a chance to grip on loose surfaces.

if the car already has abs, disabling it is easy just remove the relay and abs globe, brakes will work as per normal..
if it was to be removed completely, by disconnecting the control unit under the dash the abs light will no longer come on.. to simplify it, the whole abs is stand alone, it has no intergration with engine ecu.. |

if you really want to fit abs, i would go for ef/el abs as its a much better unit..

The first time I had the ABS cut in, I thought the brakes stopped working. Pull up quick and the. It seems that you pulled your foot off the pedal. I don't like it.

As above, the amount of times the ABS in the EB has made me s**t myself (mostly in the rain and on grass/gravel/dirt etc) it's made me believe it is more trouble then good!
Personally I wouldn't bother with it as like Troyman has said, it's a pretty ancient (20 year old) system now and is more trouble then it's worth. Get some slotted rotors and decent pads up front and you will notice a fair improvement in the braking department! Unfortunately e-series brakes don't get much better then that unless splurging in a big brake kit which can cost a bit... Good luck

parts car is now home...... and dogs box feels good... |
