Mate has been quoted $300 labour to change the ball joints on the front left of an EB. I'm not overly familiar with these but I assume there is a lower joint and an upper wishbone joint, i cant see it being that big a job. Is this reasonable?

You need a very large press to remove and replace the ball joints.
Is he just giving them the car? If so they have to quote for removing the wheel, brakes, rotors, the upright itself, press out old ball joints x 2 press in new ones and reassemble. Add the other side in and there is a least 2-3 hours labour alone. Add in the cost of the balljoints, and it wouldn't be far off. A place here in Sydney charges $80 to press out and press in ball joints if you supply the new parts and the upright already removed. BenJ

i did both lower ball joints for roadworthy on my car a couple weeks ago...
new lower ball joints were $50 and my mechanic guided me thru replacing them... let me tell you it's not a fun job! and yes you will need a press to press the new ones in, you can just hit the old ones out. unsure on the top ball joints... basically, take off the front wheels, abs, calipers, discs, outer wheel bearings and you got access to the stub axle.. undo the split pins and remove the nuts top and bottom and remove the steering arm out of the way... knock the stub axles top and bottom till the bastards fall out... that can take a while... then knock out your old tie rod ends and get the new ones pressed in. you'll need to remove the circlips before knocking the old ones out.. took me about 3 hours.. feels alot better now. |

Its not so bad with press, but you need adaptors to do the job without damaging axle and ball-joints.
