Took my car to my usual front end guy for a wheel alignment and i got the bad news.
2 x Lower ball joints = $72 2 x Tie rod ends = $44 Radius arm bushes front & rear of rod = $85 Sway bar link rubber = $25 Labour = $170 Total incl wheel alignment = $484. Are these common problems on EB's? Does this seem like a reasonable price? Can any be done on a weekend at home or is the trouble not worth it?

I wouldn't really want to attempt the ball joints but the rest shouldn't be too hard.

Sounds like a fair price.
These are the things which you need to start looking at on a 13 year old car. Rubber isn't perfect - if it was condoms would have a 100% success rate

I did F+R King Springs, F+R Shocks, Radius Rod Bushes F+R, Lower Control Arm Bushes, Link Bar Bushes, Lower Ball Joints, and Tie Rod Ends for $650. I did everything myself except pressing the Control arm bushes and the ball joints and the alignment which was included in the price. It took me about 2 days to do the whole lot including repacking my wheel bearings.
Front Radius rod bushes, lower ball joints and tie rods are very common wear items. The tie rods get flogged from turning the wheel with the car stationary when parking. |

Yeah, I've done all that myself, first time I ever did ball joints was on an EA when I did not have a press .
Now That I have a press, makes it a lot easier . Ball joints Do wear out on falcons, because the rubber around the bottom part of them breaks away, letting all dirt, water road crap get in them . |

If the boot comes off anything which holds grease in its like sanding all the mating surfaces with 60 grit continually.
Also lower ball joints fail before uppers more frequently due to them taking more forces. I have actually driven a car down the highway with the upper ball joint not bolted up. I only found out when it popped out going into the driveway over the curb. the upper only really takes force when cornering. Notice how lower control arms on any car are virtually always forged and the uppers are flimsy in comparison?? If you jack up the wheel off the ground then grab the top and bottom of the wheel and then wiggle it oppositely with your hands. If theres movement get some to look to see if the wheel is wobbling (wheel bearing) or the ball joint is wobbling. |
