do you have any other gears...this happened to me except the box stayed in 3rd gear ONLY..it does this wen it goes into safe mode coz it senses somethings wrong...turned out to be a fault in the selector switch...if you have the other problems aswell im guessing it could be fuses or somthing like that....or the odo / speedo isnt working coz its read from the box and its in safe mode therefore its not working.... or the fault is in the speedo sender in the box which is causing ur box to be in safe mode

ye going up a hill seems to have a lot of revs and not going anywhere,so im guessing that 1st and 4th are not working and all ther trouble started when the odo wasnt working i will change the speedo sensor and see what happens

Blown fuse!

Check/Replace the INST_BATT fuse (thats what it's called on EF/EL).

Now instruments, means the ECU puts the tranny into limp mode, so no 4th.

Yeah probably fuse, this has happened to me twice, 1. installed new electric aerial and maybe I shorted something, had to disconnect the battery and that fixed it. 2. On the weekend playing cricket with the car lights, and almost flattened the battery, solved by driving then turning off and back on.

Hope you get it sorted.

no speed signal means it doesn't know when to change gear, so it puts you in 3rd, unless you 'manual' shift it, then you get 1/2/3.

i couldnt shift at all wen mine done it...it was either 3rd gear or reverse....you could slam the shifter back to 1st at 100kms and it wont do nothing...just stays in 3rd

Worked in mine, maybe limp home was improved somewhat in the newer models.

if you're cluster isn't working, it's not the sender, just the fuse controlling the cluster.

did you check them with a multimeter? or just visually?

If with a mutli and they're ok, I'd say next thing to check would be the cluster since it's the bit not working.
