G'day all,
I've recently purchased an EBII GLi country car with 190kms on the clock. Everything in the car seems great, apart from a slightly squeaky suspension, and what I'm suspecting may be diff issues.. The diff seems fine, although makes a slight 'wurring' noise from 80km/h and upwards. The other thing is, there is a SLIGHT 'clunk' that comes from the back when turning corners at slow speends, i.e. at round abouts. Even though you can hear it, you cannot feel it; it appears to be just a noise at this stage. My question is - does this appear to be a diff issue, and if so, how do I go about fixing this? If it isn't, what else might it possibly be? I'm not too sure is anyone else is having similar issues with their EBII, although just wanted to confirm. Your help would be much appreciate! Thanks guys. |

Hi, and welcome to Fordmods.
It is very difficult to offer suggestions or diagnose a problem from a written description. There are other rotating components at the rear and noises could be generated from the brakes, tyres on the road, or even the rear universal joint. My best suggestion is to take it too a diff specialist and ask them if they can diagnose it. In the meantime, you could change the diff oil, which from other threads you appear to be doing. If the diff does appear to be gone, there a re a few options available to you ranging from, cheap to pricey. Hopefully we won't have to discuss those yet. Good Luck BenJ

Okay.. 'Wurring' noise has been rectified with a little diff additive..
NOW.. As usual, when one this is rectified, another arises.. Now that the diff whining has ceased, I've noticed a slight vibration in the driveline.. It's most noticable at speeds between say 60 - 90km/h, when rolling down a hill whilst in gear (it's a 4-speed auto).. While this was occurring, I placed it in neutral and continuedto roll - the vibration ceased. So it only occurs whilst in gear.. Once I returned home, I hopped under the car and had a play around.. I assumed that since it only occurs whilst in gear, the issue had to be somewhere after the gearbox.. On this note, I had a play around with the driveshaft and noticed that there was some play (about 3 to 4mm worth) at the top of the shaft, connecting to the gear box. Is this normal? Or does it seem like it's worn? And could this be contributing to the slight vibration and slight 'clunk' at slow speeds around sharp bends? If so, what could the problem be, and is it cheap/easy to fix for a car-savvy home-mechanic?? *crosses fingers* Thanks guys |

Hi mate.
I would suggest you get the rear bush in the transmission checked, where the tailshaft yoke goes in. I had a similar vibration, and had the bush and seal replaced. It cost me around the $100 mark from memory at my local auto transmission place, and cured that issue. Cheers BenJ

I had a similar vibration, and had the bush and seal replaced. It cost me around the $100 mark from memory at my local auto transmission place, and cured that issue. I just did this myself. The outside of the driveshaft runs inside the bush. When you remove the driveshaft the gearbox output shaft wobbles all over the place, don't worry about this. You need to get a new bush, driveshaft seal, extension housing gasket and o-ring for the speedo drive. My car was at a downwards angle so when i removed the rear extension housing from the gearbox there was little oil loss. I used a hacksaw to remove the old bush, and the ford dealer was so gracious as to fit the new bush for me for free. I don't think it would be difficult, though it is a press fit. The old driveshaft seal was a bastard to remove. I bought a new one from Repco that had an extra boot to keep things cleaner, but after tapping it into the housing it promptly fell out. Thankfully i'd ended up buying one from ford as well and that one fitted perfectly. I got the bush, gasket and o-ring from ford. Total cost around $40.

well before my diff blew up, it used to make clunking sounds around corners as well. Just dont do any burnouts till you get it checked out.

I have heard that in this circumstance it can be worth checking the upper shock absorber bushes.
