I have a 1994 ED Fairmont. It has just clocked over 200,000 k's. The auto trans works fine. All as smooth as it ever was, but it has stopped responding to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear shift positions. If you put it in 1st, it behaves like it is in drive. The TCC has stopped locking up too. These problems both started at the same time.
Any ideas? MMP |

Sounds like the inhibitor switch is stuffed.
In EFEL it also sends a signal as to what gear you are in to the ECU. Not sure in ED. Mine has the same trouble. Bought a new switch for $93 from Repco. Will install this weekend and see how it goes. |

Any ideas? MMP sounds like the transmission is in limp home mode there could be a problem with the tcm or a sensor fault. |

haha, thats odd, My G/F's ELXR6 just had the same problem, I fixed it about 10 minutes ago, it was just one of the woring looms had come off the inhibitor switch. I dont know if if this is your prob but at least it points you towards the inhibitor switch.

Update. Fired up the ED the next morning and the problem had gone. All behaving properly. May be temp related. Have not had the car on a long run since. Thanks for the suggestions. Will check out the inhibitor switch (Where is it?). Will post my findings.

Hey, i have had the exact same problem, in exactly the same car. Unfortunately I haven't found a solution yet, but today I am changing the gearbox oil which may help. I can't seem to narrow it down to certain situations though, sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't? Let us know how you go.
