ok so when i bought my ed gil, the radiator was in bad shape, and the head gasket went shortly after changeing it, thru out that time of the engine running hot, i noticed that the auto would shift very hard from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to third would clunk. only when hot!.
after the radiator was replaced with a newie the problem went away and the auto was smooth all the time.
now its slowly came back again, same again, drives perfectly when cold, or after a good freeway run, but when driving aorund town or stop start, it starts shifting hard 1st to 2nd, and really clunking into 3rd. this is my first auto car so its all new to me, all my other cars have been manuals,
i havnt serviced the auto yet, but from what i can tell, the autos oil seems quite black.

my question is, should i try changeing the oil and filter first and see how that goes?
and if so, whats a good midrange auto oil to use? and what grade.

or can anyone else sugest any other aparent problems that i havent thought of?

does it have an external cooler? and just buy some 85LE auto trans oil. not DXIII

nah no external coooler, iv read that the standard eb/ed tow pack auto coolers are a good upgrade,

The Genuine filter is part number ED 7A098 A $53.00 from your Ford dealer
The oil, TQ95 you can buy from most auto shops in 5 litres as well as 1 ltr.

refill is about 5L. standard tow pack coolers and s**t. i've got one and my auto still overheats

As far as I know, 10 litres for a complete fill. Usually takes between 4-5 litres for a refill after dropping the sump and a new filter.

thats not bad, ill just be doing a basic service, hopefully it fixes my problems, fingers crossed, if not ill take it to an auto tech

sorry to hijack, but how important is it to run the correct fluid (ie. suited to BTRs)
i never noticed this until just recently when i spotted a fluid made for BTRs lol
i've always just used random fluid...

its just the letter code for the tranmission

ah there ya go, learn something every day, id asume with oils, it would just have to be something that meets the requirements of the box, ie thickness and flow rateing
