Ride: EBII XR8 Sprint Update

Location: Townsville
QLD, Australia

I've had an EBII 5.0L Fairmont for about 7 years now and the only mods I've done to it up until now are a tuned 3" exhaust system and to put most of the ED XR8 Sprint styled gear on it,

Sprint Steering wheel with cruise on the wheel,
Sprint 16" rims
Sprint badges
Sprint grille and xr headlights
Sprint Spoiler/bootlip
Colour coded the door handles

I went to the car auctions last week to look at a car for a friend and stop dead when I spotted a 94 ED Sprint same colour as my fairmont in the damaged section.
It had been rear-ended and knocked in a bit at the front but was drivable.
I waited all day to bid on it as it was the second last car in the auction but I made sure I got it.

My plan is to transplant the entire running gear from the Sprint and replace my current 5.0L and auto.

Some of the issues I have thought about so far....

- ECU/TCU not being compatible from my EB to the Sprint (different engine management, auto TCU not compatible with the 5 spd T5
- If I swap the ECU/TCU from the Sprint will it be able to run my Trip computer and ABS
- How much trouble is it going to be to fit the clutch pedal

If some of the more experienced and knowledgable people on here have any thoughts on this process and any of the issues involved I'd love to hear them.

The only thing I can help you with is the clutch pedal. Rather then changing the entire pedal box. Ring Mal Wood Automotive in Canberra and order one of their E-series clutch pins. They are a wonderful thing that attaches the clutch pedal to your existing auto pedal box saving all the hassles of changing the pedal box.

thanks for the info.

I will need to change the brake pedal also I assume as the auto brake pedal is wider than the manual one?

The Sprint has been hit pretty hard in the rear crunching both quarters and pushing in the boot.
The front damage doesn't look too bad but with a more thorough inspection I'd probably find plenty of work there also.
There is a lot of work to get the Sprint repaired, then it needs to be inspected and certified as it was a Repairable Write Off.

My fairmont is in good condition and has all the luxuries available to a Ford car at the time (sunroof, premium sound etc).

I realise the Sprint is worth more in good running order but I think it would nearly cost more to get it back on the road than what it is valued at.

I'll have to take some pics and put them up to see what you guys think.

i couldn't see a drama using the sprint ecu and that in you car because the wiring should be very similair if not the same... the fact that your car if half a sprint (badges etc etc) the enigne would seal the deal the only thing it would have from the sprint would be the compliance plates saying it was a sprint... would be on hell of a replica

I was thinking of doing a dodgey and swapping the compliance plates. But probably won't, as much as I'm tempted to.

Last time I looked around a Ford dealership the guys there thought I had an original from looking at the outside...

I just finished reading your epic post about your conversion mate. Had heaps of good points for me to look into.

Cheers.

Here are the pics of the ED Sprint.

As I said the hit in the rear was hard, it has made the doors overlap, creased the roof and the rear left wheel arch rubs on the tyre.

Very nice pick-up mate, love the sprints.

All i can suggest is to post up in the V8 Workshop forum, you may get a few more replies in there.
