Hey, has anyone had some experience with the vibration in an ef falcon that increases with speed. This feels and sounds way to quick for a wheel bearing and is more like :roll: at the faster rotation of the tailshaft. I have had a mechanic say a lot of ef wear out the rear bush that the tailshaft youke fits onto. Does anyone have an idea as to the cost involved for parts and labour ?? Our ford guys in Taree are not to be trusted so I wont be going to them for this one.

hey i just came from there and the same thing is happening with my car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i'll be sure not to go back there!!!

i did a rear extention housing seal myself and i got them to tighten up the bolts on the diff where the tail shaft joins it. it wasn't vibrating when i drove in from old bar, and on the way out from 75-100km/h it vibrates badly.

my assumption is that the tailshaft is out of balance or the uni joints are F**k.

seal is still leaking by the way, they reckon i didn't put it in properly (probably).

theyre gonna be sorry tomorrow!!!!

The extn housing seal is about $20 and if there is a bush fitted you'll have to ask Ford for price and availability.
The bush is mentioned in my manuals but not shown.
Why not ask the mechanic who told you?
Casey, a vibrating tailshaft causes leaks even with new seals.

I had the bush and seal replaced by a local Auto specialist for $100.

No leaks, and no vibration.

i had to replace the whole extention housing. all good now $44 for a 2nd hand housing and gasket $8 for the seal and $88 for someone to fit it.

long story short the bush inside the housing had come free (wanker before me thrashed the crap outta the poor car) and was sitting up against the yoke when i changed the seal. i didnt know it was the bush i thought it was part of the old seal (derrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr d*ckhead)

on the drive into town to ford the tailshaft machined out the housing and almost fractured it....

all good now, just gotta get another engine mount and she'll be as good as new (almost)

My car has been doing that since 2000. The auto went bang goin up a hill when I put it into 3rd. A little burning smell came out as well. But has been ok since, just has that vibration, which gets worse the more load there is, especially uphill @ 75mkh.

So you reckon I've just done a bush and approx $88.00 to fix it?

is it leaking auto fluid from the extension housing on the back of the gearbox? also check to see if there is heaps of play in the tailshaft. if there is you may need another extension housing as the brass bush needs to be pressed into the housing.

$88 was for the repair and $44 was for another housing. if it's not that it could be a gearbox problem like clutch packs slipping or bands that need adjusting. keeping in mind i'm an apprentice chef and not a mechanic lol.

i'm told i'm pretty damm cluey though

I replaced my bush last year, and yes it needs to be pressed into the housing. it's possible to place the new bush on top of the old one, place a bit of wood on top and tap it in with a mallet, pushing the old one out as the new one goes in.

i think my tail shaft may be damaged as there is some vibration at 110km/h that wasn't there before the work was done.

hmmmmm.... any ideas?

itd also possible to loose a weight off the tailshaft from it hitting something (low spot for example) or they may have nit lined up the tail shaft the way it came off. If its not aligned the same way it was from pre installation of the new bits, it may vibrate. Maybe. my ef has had the same vibration since i got it second hand with 33 thou k's on it in oct 1997
i asked the Taree ford dealer to fix it but they couldn't feel a thing. funny how wauranty stuff is like that ay...pr..cks. Anyway its still there and is always worse with a load in it. Dont know if its the extra load on the tailshaft or the slight change in the angle of the shaft due to the lower ride height. I am told by a toyota mechanic (at least someone knows) that thet are always doing bushes. He also stated that vibration is from the worn bush. Betta get a mechanic to fix mine ay, but not mid coast Ford !! :roll:

Your problem is the diff angle, when you altered the ride height the diff faces up.
You'll find wear marks on the rear end of your tail shaft. (where its hitting the tail shaft hump) around 20cm from the diff yolk.

To rectify you'll need source EF XR Upper arms.
Or alter the diff housing upper arm position..

OR

Replace the EF diff housing with an Updated EL one, with this, you'll need the Upper arms, hand brake cable, and watts link.

To give you some pix on what Krytox is referring to try these links, much the same stuff but the second has more detail. Doesn't matter that the models are different the principle is the same, as is the method of finding out what length arm you need.

Thanks for that information. My ef futura has the xr6 springs all round so the xr arms sound like whats neded to fix the problem. I was impressed with the photos too. Thanks again.
