hi all, i have a 1996 ef 4speed automatic stationwagon when it changes through the gears it makes a jolt from the rear end i was wondering iff anyone could tell me where to start looking apparently the transmission was changed about 6 months ago.

Could be a uni, or suffering backlash in the diff like mine was.

Check all the bushes in the rear suspension, and position & tightness of the U bolts. It helps the ride to apply Moly grease to the slip pads at the end of each leaf of the rear springs, ride quality that is.
Also check the pinion bearing by seeing if you can move it up & down with your hands, & look at the unijoints to. Another one to look at is the slip-yoke bush at the rear of the auto. the are renowned for flogging out. if its stuffed it will move up & down about 3 to 4mm at the front uni end or about 1mm or more at the oilseal.

thanks guys ive done a few checks and it seems there is a lot of play in the diff, i dont know iff its the correct way to check but i put it in park and could rock the car back and forwards about 3 inches eitherway so i guess im up for another diff.

That doesn't mean your diff is stuffed. I'd be surprised if you can't do that in any auto.

ok thanks to cjh`s reply ive been out and had another good look and it seems the slip yoke bush is stuffed so i will be off to autobarn tomorrow i will pickup another extension housing seal as well cos when i got the car it had just been replaced (apparently) and i noticed just then that its leaking again.
