yesterday i pulled the dash out of my ef to install a manual pedal box, now when the steering wheel is set to it's highest there are spots where it gets really hard to turn the wheel but when i move the wheel down it gets easyer to turn...i think i might have bent it or somthing but i dont know...any ideas would be great

You can try spraying some spray-grease into the bearing....see how that goes.

i put a new coulmn in today and it has the same issue :S...when i move the steering wheel to it's lowest setting it's like normal but the furth up it's set the hard it gets to turn...it only gets hard to turn at certain points, almost at each side of full lock and near straight...

Pull the rack boot back on the driver's side and see if there is any grease in there...there should be a fair amount.

If the steering column is allowed to drop to the floor, it over extends the range that the bearing at the floor is supposed to travel and causes this problem.
Were you careful when fitting the new column? |

at first i let the wheel rest on the drivers seat while i tried to connect the ( i think it's the steering rack ) in the engine bay to the coulmn...there wasnt enough movement to do that so i bolted it back to the dash loosely while i connected the steering rack..once that was done i bolted the coulmn to the dash properly..it seemed to get a little better when i kept on steering it left and right but it's still bad enough to stop the wheel going back to center while driving

so the consensus is the bearing at the base of the coulmn is rooted?

Always remove the steering column when removing the whole dash assembly.....always.

Loosen the top connection of your intermediate shaft and raise the steering column to the high point and see how it feels. Could be that the shaft has slipped down a little and is biding when you raise the wheel to the high setting.

i had a tub of HTB grease laying around so i used some of it on a spair steering coulmn i had and that seemed to have made it feel a lot smoother when turning, so i might buy some spray grease and grease her up lol

hey guys just a bit of an update, after using the HTB grease on my old coulmn and it making it betteri decided to go to town on my new one with a can of wd40...it feels a LOT better..the wheel is able to return to centre after taking a corner now but still a little iffy :S
