XR and non XR are identical boxes.

Speedo Drive is on the Right Hand side of the extension housing (about mid way) The sender unit usually has a red coated pvc cable atteched to it.

To see if its a later model box (eb2 onwards) look for the roofing Nail on the Left hand side of the case.

i thought the xr6 box has tapered input shaft bearings (wotever that means). just read it in my gregories manual.

mine is supposed to be an xr6 box too. dunno for sure tho

Yep, I have also been told that the xr6 boxes use different bearings. Mal Wood also charges more for an e-series xr6 t5 than a 'standard' t5.

Yes and no. The EAs do have a short 1st gear but it is a little too short for anything other than the 2.77 and 2.92 diffs that they came with. They are also the weakest of all the t5's.

The EBII/ED/XG gregories is referring to the bearing between the input shaft and the mainshaft - XF/EA has 15 parallel rollers, while EBII onwards runs a tapered roller bearing.

I've had an EL XR6 T5 apart recently to check a synchro issue - I didn't find any difference in the bearings used compared to a std EBII T5.
There were revisions to the synchro assy's, etc, but nothing greatly relevant to this discussion.
