Hey guys, can anyone recommend a good replacement clutch for an EF XR6?
I had an Exedy Sports Tuff (FMK-6913) clutch and it sh*t itself within 12 months. |

Jeeesus! You must have given that thing a pounding and a half!, Exedy sports tuffs are good for average driving conditions at moderately higher power levels.
There is alot of good feedback on FordMods on these and I have run one for almost two years without ANY issues. Sounds to me that you will benifit from a brass button (if you are giving it a regular flogging) or if you can afford it, a custom twin plate (bit nicer than a brass button)

I actually didn't flog it all. I've been really good with my car, and barely drive it.
I'm starting to think it's something else, the EF's are known for their problems in this department. Going to get it looked at next week. |

Then it is probs a leaky rear main seal or gearbox input shaft seal.
Oil will contaminate the friction surface and cause major slippage.

Also, have a squiz at the pedal, where the pedal passes through the firewall and the rod and bush assy that joins the clutch cable to the fork for damage.

In what way has your new clutch s**t itself?
You can't select gears? Bad clutch slippage? Horrible grinding noises? It could have been a faulty clutch from the beginning ... until you pull it out you wont know what's gone wrong. {USERNAME} wrote: the EF's are known for their problems in this department. Are they?I've only recently replaced my first clutch assy after 230,000 km ... so no reliability problems there ... and I drive it reasonably hard

Can barely put it into gear, when I do it grinds the gears and the pedal feels like it's much further away, like it's almost been pushed back into the car. |

check the firewall for cracking around where the cable runs???
this is fairly common and will cause what you describe.. |

as said - check firewall for cracks - check cable isn't kinked or ends damaged - and check the pedal box isn't bent out of shape

This might sound stupid, but where's the best place to check it? Inside the car, or get under it and have a look? Not much experience with this sort of thing.

Get yourself a torch and have a look at the pedal box assy under the dash.
Have a look at the shaft that the clutch pedal pivots on ... does it look stratight or does it look on an angle? Carefully check the metal sourrounding the pin for cracks. While looking at the clutch pedal shaft, slowly depress the clutch pedal (you might need the help of a friend here) and again check to see if the shaft moves at all or if the surrounding metal moves or if a crack opens up. Where the clutch shaft is welded to the pedal box is a known weak point and is prone to fracture over time allowing the shaft to bend against the pressure of pulling in the clutch plate in and so making gear changes hard if not impossible depending how bad it is. The clutch pedal hight will brop and it will feel like you only have half the normal pedal travel. Also check the firewall where the clutch cable passes through as other have suggested ... again with a torch and a friend depressing the clutch while you look for cracking or flexing.
