Hi everyone,

I have the opportunity to buy a complete EL xr6 diff.

I want it for the LSD 4 pin centre, plus the mounting points for the watts links and trailing arms (i think) are apparently better placed for the factory lower ride height. So more appropriate roll centre and less likely to axle tramp.

Will this diff bolt into an EB?? What am i looking at in terms of effort (and therefore price) to fit it?? Its an EB II 6 cylinder S pac.

Also am i wrong about any of the above suspension stuff??

Like all opportunities this one will soon be gone, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

the suspension arms are the same from eb2-ef.
the thing you will find is the rear brakes are different..
you can modify the brake lines and handbrake cable to except the ef brakes or you can fit the eb brake backing plates, calipers ect.. but you need to remove the axles to do that..

EF trailing arms are different ( to EA to ED, they are the same ), as are the XR6 ones are different again. Parkbrake set up is different as are the service brakes.

cheers for the brake tips,

i meant that just the xr's came like an inch lower than other model variations from the factory, therefore the different roll centre apparently led them to move the mounts a bit lower. For example my stock s-pac ride height is the same as a GL, or whatever the base model was, but my bro's stock EL xr8 ride height is a bit (like an inch) lower that a base model EL.

edit
sorry, like cjh said, posting at the same time...

yeh k so theres a bit more involved.

So will the trailing arms just not fit?

I guess im also after your advice on whether its a good idea, considering i'll be paying someone else to do it. If i cant get the benefits of the suspension mounts for a reasonable price then i'll pretty much just be buying a centre, for which the price is a little steep.

Has anyone actually tried it??

I have done exactly this conversion.

The EF XR6 diff should have only one mounting point on the upper control arm bracket. Use your exisiting upper control arm from the EB.

Re the lower mount point as you mentioned, this is for the watts linkage, which is lower on the diff hat. Your existing watts linkage will still be fine.

As for brakes, I put the EB brakes on the EF diff, or you can mod your current handbrake cables to work with the EF/EL diff.

Regardless of which brakes you use, you will need to swap the metal brake lines from the EB diff to the EF diff and the brake distribution block where the breather is too.

I hope that helps.

There is a write up in my old EB Sedan thread. There is a link to it in my signature.

Cheers
BenJ

Hey guys,

One more thing - is an EF xr6 diff center a 4 pin?????

I heard it was but im definately not sure. I'm under the impression a 4 pin center is noticably tougher and came in all the top model falcons for some time (and VL turbos) but dont know if an xr6 counts.

I have to make this dude an offer tomorrow so if you have any idea please let me know..

Cheers,
Andrej.

Dont mean to bump but i thought this would be worth mentioning.

The "EF XR6 3.45 LSD diff complete disc to disc" item which i bid $200 bucks on and won, turned out to be an EF 6 cylinder Fairmont Ghia Diff. In his words, "its the same, tickford diff as the XRs".

I was then in the awkward position of either having a go at this guy and backing out of my purchase on the grounds of a misleading description, or handing over my cash to avoid confrontation and take home basically (a very tight feeling) LSD centre with ratios i already have.

A mate took the time (over an hour each way) and petrol to drive us there in his folks land cruiser to get it, and I basically folded and bought it. "The centre'll be worth it" i thought. Turns out i quite like my mini spool and its been sitting in my garage since. I seriously dont think i'll use it.

Anyway, the moral of the story is if you think you've been blatantly misinformed regarding an ebay purchase and dont want to kick up a stink, think again because you usually have legal grounds for it and paperweights are cheaper from officeworks.

The search continues...

All EB2-AU diffs are 4 Pinion, LSD or open centre
