Mates car, 160,000km
The auto is changing gears at random and the fault is intermittent. Sometimes it will operate perfectly then go into a dodgy condition that seems like its an electrical fault. What happens is say you're on the highway in fourth, TCC locked, it might suddenly change back to third for no reason at all or even second. If you accelerate a little it will go back to 4th. When you back off it often kicks back to third. Any ideas? |

TPS - swap it with a known good one off a mates car.
The gear position switch generally will be erratic when manually selecting gears. Also check battery / engine / trans earth cables as well, a loose battery or earth cable can cause all sorts of dramas |

Did a swap test of the TPS with my car, since mine is manual I guess I wont have any stupid symptoms related to lazybox drivers
Being intermittent, no immediate fault appeared on either car so we'll see over the next week or so. The reason we did the TPS is there was a fault code for it. How much are TPS units new/secondhand? |

It will be the inhibitor switch.
Happened to mine about 18 months ago. About $80 for the switch and $30 for the Transmission place to fit.

Now that the fault is fixed since I replaced the TPS thanks to 66 coupe's great advice, I'll go out and spend another $80 for an inhibitor switch plus $30 for someone to fit it which will make me 200% sure its fixed. ps. Another question - my car is a manual (been converted) and no symptoms occur on mine. When I swap it back to my mates car the problems occur again. I noticed mine runs a bit rougher on petrol now which I couldnt give a stuff about since its always on LPG so would a dodgy TPS cause any other issues I'm not aware of on my car?
Reason I'm asking is I'm happy to have hte dodgy one since I can't tell any difference, it'll save my mate buying one instead he can get me bourbon |

Reason I'm asking is I'm happy to have hte dodgy one since I can't tell any difference, it'll save my mate buying one instead he can get me bourbon The TPS still runs your ignition timing, and idle control, so if its dodgey, it can still cause a few issues to arise even though its a manual. Best to replace it, and be done with it.... might have to miss out on the drinks though |

The gear position switch is the place to start. either the contacts inside have gotten very worn, or the ingression of water. very common problem with all the 4speed autos. you may find it rusted to the shaft on the auto, and you will bust it trying to get it off. its on the left hand side of the autobox.

if u;ve put the good tps back on your car its possible you will still have effects as the pcm will have "learnt" to compensate for the faulty tps to some extent. Best to reset the KAM in the ecu by disconnecting the battery for a minute and cleaning the throttle body...

I wont do it. pps Thanks 66 coupe - it did the trick You can pull them apart and clean them with contact cleaner. There is two tab/clips that hold the two parts together. The problem may be getting it off the box without breaking it but it may not need to come off to clean it.

Once you have removed the cover off the gear position switch, you have disturbed the brown o'ring seal, and you won't get it to seal again, so replace it, it easier.
