My sisters auto selector, when left in Drive, moves back and forth by up to 1/2 a cm, as the auto changes through the gears, and even when the car goes over bumps.
It's as if the whole box is loose under the car. Would that indicate worn bushes? My EF has never done it. |

Any ideas, I'm a bit concerned it could be potentially dangerous?

3 things are attaching the engine/trans combo to the car - 2 engine mounts and 1 trans mount. Check engine mounts and trans rear mount for failure or loose bits - those are the only things that could fail and make the engine/trans move back and forward.
Anyway, start there and see what results.\ Cheers RD

first thing to check would be the transmission mount, then the engine mounts...

my EF auto has been doing that for over a year, its not the mounts because ive had them all redone and checked about 3 times in the past 12 months, the auto is fine and was recently serviced, it doesnt seem to be a big issue, it stopped bothering me once i knew everything was fine...

Id be thinking bushes - that is the two in the transmission selector. Theyre about $12 for the pair from ford, and they take a little effort to put in.
But its very worthwhile - shifter firms right up. Cheers |

Probley the geal selector bushes and selector shaft that runs thru the side of the box, is just a little worn. I wouldnt worrie about it... How many km's on the box and car?? My box use to do this before its rebuild..

^ Nigel has it.
The auto shifter isn't directly connected to the box (the linkage has a bit of play in it, no enough to get any substantial movement to the shifter. It's just worn it's bushes loose and is rattling around. Nothing major to worry about. Not even essential to fix.

Ahh that makes sense. Her EL has 130,000 km's on it.
I'm starting to think this car was a Friday car. Really nice when purchased in 2003. Immaculate inside and out. But since, the boot started leaking water to inside, rusting the inside boot lid. The odometer light went out years ago, and then 1 half of the clusters lights went out. Major rattles behind dash. Top of the steering wheel surface is wearing out. Driveline knock when gear changes @ 50/75kmh. Sometimes won't start with auto in Park. Strange wind plus road noise into the cabin when sitting in rear of car. But quiet in front. But the engine is strong, and very reliable. It's the silver engine and powerful, pulls well. I have to say I've experienced none of these things in my older EF II. Except for the odd knock in driveline when slowing after gear change. Mainly when running rich in morning, when she wants to go. My steering wheel is still like new. The EF is a better quality build IMO. They went cheap with the EL, except for that beautiful Silver Hybrid engine. |

The EL auto has developed another issue, the one above has not been fixed as yet.
There finding it almost impossible to start the car in PARK, and now she's becoming hard to start in Neutral as well. I'm thinking switch of some kind. Easy fix do you think?? |

The problem is definitely the bushes in the selector set up.
There are three pivot points. 1. Were the selector bolts to the gearbox. There is a bush there that falls out fails. Replace it. 2. Under the where the gear selector meets the Gear lever shaft. 3. Where the shaft passes through the floor plate to meet the Gear Knob and slector shaft. There are replacement bushes available from Ford, for around $3. You have to remove the shaft and slide in the plastic bushes. This should fix all the above issues. BenJ

With the gear selector moving it could also be worn upper and lower control arm bushes from diff to body.
