I vaguely remember seeing it on members cars, but my tired mind cant 100% picture it. |

Yeah, thought there may have been extra.
Bowmanr: Did you check the upper uni at the column ?? It comes off as well, has a torx bolt the holds that on. All of those components only fit one way, the upper stuff has a spline that's missing. Another good idea is that if any of those bolts are loose, the items won't fall out - provided the bolts don't that is.

Must admit I havent noticed the upper uni joint.
I'll have to get under it again. If the only difference between the v8 and 6 cylinder one is the shield then I'll try and get in touch with Papa Smurf and get one of his. I'm sure I can work something out with the shield. Thanks Reg |

I sent Papa Smurf a pm to try and get one from him.
Might as well use the 6 cyl if it'll fit. I think I can put the shield from the old one on easily enough. Hi Snap0964 I havent noticed the upper uni joint your referring to but when I hear back from Papa Smurf I'll ask him if he has one of those as well - might as well replace it if theres a possibility its adding to the sloppy steering. the shaft seems to come straight back to the column from the knuckle. Is the upper one actually inside the column. I can actually see some movement in the little uni joint at the knuckle. I think it gets overheated, especially since I fitted the extractors. I have added some of that exhaust wrap stuff round the extractors now. But too late, I'm afraid. |

That bell shaped shield taps on and off.
Your steering rack should be same as I6's, except the pressure switch port has a blanking bolt. The upper uni is close to the firewall, right under the brake booster - probably need a torch to see it properly, they're up and away from the grime and heat, I've never heard them to give problems. Check it by fitting the intermediate shaft to it, do up the bolt, leave the rack end free(unconnected), engage steering lock by pulling the ign key from the barrel, turn wheel 1/4 turn to the left. Rotate the intermediate shaft each way, and look/feel for play. Keep track on the steering wheel turning - it has a clockspring which unwinds/winds. You can reset it, but you need to take the wheel off.

Hi all,
I would like to say thanks, to all of you, for your help. It's all been very informative and helpful. I really do appreciate it. I am going to try and get to Papa Smurf later this week and buy the 6 cylinder version. Then I'll swap over the shield. I'll also check the upper one, just in case. After all it has done 211,000. nearly run in for a v8 Once again, Thank you all for the help Reg |

If it's the v8 one and you've got the shield on.
When I replaced mine, the shield was hitting/ binding on the exhaust and I had to move it slightly. Now it works just fine. hope that helps.... |
