Hey everyone,
Just wondering from anyone who has had experience with the genuine ford el clutch cables, how long should i expect to get from one? Just roughly, i dont wanna throw the dosh at ford if im only gonna get 6 months out of it.. im rather gental with my clutch (dont smash it in or dump it etc) and im running std clutch at the moment, Any idea roughly would be nice, 6 months? 12 months? Cheers everyone

I'm pretty sure they're mostly made in the same place these days anyway. Flexible Drive Agencies.
Mine has been in the car for near on 5 years. |

make sure you check the hook on the adaptor that goes inbetween the clutch cable and the clutch fork for signs of stress. they can crack and then it doesnt matter how good or s**t your cable is

I bought a genuine clutch cable to replace the old genuine clutch cable (not broken) that came with my conversion kit. After about 12 months, the new clutch cable snapped...had to replace it on the side of the road with the old genuine cable. The old one has been in the car since the conversion in 2007 bar the 12 months I replaced with a new one, still going today. I am not sure what happened, as I didn't change the cable routing or the angle it entered the bell housing when the cable was replaced.
The new cable broke at the clutch fork end...the little knobby thing broke off. So either the knobby thing was crap or I managed some how to hook it onto the fork awkwardly causing it to wear out faster.

Ford's cables were always made by flexible drive agencies... They just didn't advertise it... Throttle cables and cruise cables too... Pretty sure if you dug into it you'd find flexible drive agencies supplied Ford... They would've hated the BA when throttle cables were replaced with fly by wire, which also meant the cruise cable was deleted and the clutch cable was replaced with hydraulic...
My clutch was seemingly OK by just replaced recently as part of the new exedy clutch install... prior to that the old one lasted at least 8 years and still seemed fine, though did start to wear when the firewall cracked about 2/3 away around and went crooked... I'll expect this flexible drive one to last as long as long as the clutch if not longer... Cheers, Tim

Ahk, thanks for the replies everyone, i ended up going down to ford this morning and they told me that theyre no longer available from ford. So i went to a spare parts guy and bought one of the "flexible drive" cables, so hopefully all will be good,

Dont wanna start a new thread.. is it necessary to lube up the new cables when theyre brand new? Or do they come pre lubed? Should i do it anyway just for the sake of it? Thanks guys.

Don't put any lube on it.
They are ready to go as is. Any oil/grease will only attract dirt grime and gum it up only to make it sticky and crap. |

You can lube the clutch pivot pin under the dash if you can be bothered.
It's a good chance to check for cracking. |

I may do that, And shes not cracking lol, im using a malwood pin kit. And its only been a manual for 5 weeks and running std clutch, and im not crazy on the clutch either, it has a rather easy life, too easy for a XR but anyway
