Gday

I have a EL XR6 manual conversion that i am putting in and i currently have a 3.9 diff ratio, has anyone else got this setup?

What its like to drive around and does it rev too high on the freeway?

Cheers

it wouldnt be much different on the freeway compared to the auto with 3.9s.
but with 3.9 gears with the t5 your first gear will be so short it would be almost useless..

i dont have 3.9s but a friend of mine did and he was getting 40kmh out of 1st gear about 80kmh out of 2nd, 135 km out of 3rd and 160 out of 4th..and imo its utterly pointless..all gear change no acceleration kind of reminds me of driving a van  ...
i got 3.45 and even i can take off in second without much effort lol..
with 3.45 i get about 60 out of 1st, 100 out of 2nd, 155 out of 3rd about 180 out of 4th. aproxx..
it wouldnt be to bad if the engine would rev to 8000rpm...

i even consider 3.7s a tad to low for a manual...
but others may have different opinions.

i had 3.7's behind an EA-EBI T5 and it was bloody great for awhile, the car responded instantly to any throttle control..... was very fun.. I beleive this is comparable to 3.9's behind an EBII-EL T5

Highways rpms were about 2400 @ 100 which never bothered me as fuel consumption was never worse than stock. However the rpm's jump very quickly if you wanted to sit on say 115-120kph

until i got sick of the short gear changes when i just wanted to cruise around, so ended up converting back to auto.

Use this calc to work out rpms & speed with any diff ratio along with any gear ratio

I have 3.23 diff gears with T5. Launch sucks, but 2000rpm 100km/hr is good fuel eco on highways.

You can fix that by adding some boost :D

My old EF had 3.9's and a T5, car had a few mods dyno read 168rwkw and ran 14.4 @ 99.5MPH at calder and I loved it, just try it out I don't think you'll wanna change it.

Mine revved at around 2400RPM on the freeway.

My EF has a tag for 3.23 but I can say it sits higher than 2000 at 100kph (maybe 2300).
It is a factory manual??

To check if your ef falcon is a factory manual, check the vehicle identification plate located at the rear passenger side of the engine bay, just below the left hand corner of the windscreen. If it is a factory manual, the trans code will be "K",factory automatic cars will have either "H" for column shift or "W" for floor shift.Engine codes are as follows:Standard 4 litre 6-code H,Hi performance 4 litre 6(XR6 and ef2 fairmont Ghia)-Code X,5 litre V8-Code Z.All above codes are from factory Ford Ef Falcon workshop manual.(it also has model codes listed.I can post these here if anyone is interested.)
